Drastic advancements in the computer industry have brought about today's complicated and various computer technologies. In particular, two can be noticed with respect to the area of the computing environment. One is the technology which has enabled video-conferencing, which handles multimedia data on the Mbone, and the other is the World Wide Web (WWW), which provides an environment in which to easily locate various kinds of information that the user wants. The growing interest in video-conferencing has drawn researchers' attention to real-time synchronous collaboration environments. This paper presents the development of such a synchronous collaboration environment which can deal with multimedia data between multiple users in real time using WWW systems. The developed environment can be characterized by two features: the multiplication of transfer channels which support real-time multimedia data transfer, and fault tolerance. Multiplication of transfer channels amplifies the ability to transfer multimedia data, and fault tolerance gives reliability to users.

The DSPMtool is a distributed client/server software project management information system that consists of the tools and techniques used to gather; analyse, integrate, and disseminate the outputs of various software project management processes. The DSPMtool borrows a few ideas from an emerging group of client/server technology called "groupware", which is essentially a collection of technologies that brings people in different parts of the organization, or even from remote sites across the globe, to work together by collecting and sharing information. Multimedia document management is an example of groupware technology that plays an important role in the design of the DSPMtool. Other groupware technologies such as workflow, e-mail, conferencing, and scheduling invoke a great number of ideas and possibilities for ways of conducting and managing a software project, and some of these have found its way into the DSPMtool.
Collaborative fuzzy clustering concerns a process of revealing a structure of a given dataset, which is common or similar to a number of outer datasets, and the collaborative information is transmitted by some media (say partition matrix or prototypes) for the sake of the safety and personal privacy of data. In Horizontal Collaborative Fuzzy C-Means (HC-FCM), the dataset and the outer datasets are all about a same group of patterns but given in different feature spaces, and the tool for transmitting collaborative information is partition matrix. Thus, we can call it partition matrix-based HC-FCM. In this study, we introduce the prototypes into HC-FCM resulting in the partition matrix and prototype-based HC-FCM where the collaborative information is transmitted by both partition matrix and prototypes. Meanwhile we give the prototype-based HC-FCM algorithm where the collaborative information is transmitted by prototypes. We not only discuss the new versions of HC-FCM but also do the comparisons among them. The difference among these algorithms (FCM, partition matrix-based HC-FCM, prototype-based HC-FCM, partition matrix and prototype- based HC-FCM) were visualized in the experiments. Good performances of the new algorithm are revealed there.
Awareness of fellow developers' activities has been widely recognized as essential in facilitating collaboration in a software developing team. However, as reported in several field studies on software development, awareness information on software artifact and coworker is difficult to acquire. To help software developers maintain group awareness and enhance their collaboration, we developed a prototype workspace awareness tool called SecondWATCH based on Second Life, a 3D online virtual world. SecondWATCH informs developers of real-time and history artifact and coworker information by monitoring team members' activities on their local workspaces, version control repository, and bug tracking system. It then extracts, analyzes, and visualizes the information in SL as a common view shared by the whole team using a 3-D city metaphor. We have successfully used SecondWATCH to visualize history information of three open-source Java projects, Free-Mind, JEdit, and GUJ, and also using it as our workspace awareness tool when we are developing it.
The paper discusses the domain of Army logistics planning at the level of the ODSCLOG (Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Logistics) and describes tools to assist in this planning. In particular, we have developed a prototype collaboratory (CLINT) for logistics planning that relies on Microsoft NetMeeting/sup TM/ as the collaborative infrastructure, and a tool named THREADS to support logistics problem solving. THREADS is a "visual simulation" of logistics routes that allows planners to quickly identify bottlenecks and compare alternative plans.
Since 1996 the collaborative research center 392 at the Darmstadt University of Technology has been working in the field of DFE (design for environment). Within the last years, the research center, along with other researchers worldwide, has yielded many information resources concerning DFE. The problem nowadays is not the lack of information resources for DFE, rather that of choosing the most suitable ones for the actual problem. Therefore, an information system has been developed which provides the designer with the 'right' context-sensitive information resources. With the information system, it is possible to create different views on the information resources according to the designer's needs. To enable this, an information model with the associations between information resources and criteria to access the information resources has been developed. This information model is the basis for the information system which is implemented in the intranet of the research center. First results have shown that the designer can access the 'right' information resources efficiently and effectively.
