Liquid water content estimates using simultaneous S and Kaband radar measurements

Radio Science, 2011

A technique for the estimation of total liquid water content (LWC; the sum of cloud water and rainwater contents) using simultaneous S and Kaband scanning radar observations is proposed and tested using the National Center for Atmospheric Research simultaneous S band and Kaband dual-polarimetric (S-PolKa) radar system. The sources of error for this wavelength pair are evaluated, and the methods ...

Inclined Zenith Aurora over Kyoto on 17 September 1770: Graphical evidence of extreme magnetic storm

Space Weather, 2017

Red auroras were observed in Japan during an extreme magnetic storm that occurred on 17 September 1770. We show new evidence that the red aurora extended toward the zenith of Kyoto around midnight. The basic appearance of the historical painting of the red aurora is geometrically reproduced based on the inclination of the local magnetic field and a detailed description ...

  • Liquid water content estimates using simultaneous S and Kaband radar measurements

The sources of error for this wavelength pair are evaluated, and the methods to mitigate them are discussed. The results are LWC estimates at each radar volume that are equivalent to specifying a reflectivity (Z) – LWC relation constrained by the measured attenuation over 2 km radar ray segments. Because the radars are scanning, the LWC can be mapped out over the spatial volume and temporal evolution of the clouds. The method produces reasonable results that qualitatively compare well to in situ aircraft observations.

  • Inclined Zenith Aurora over Kyoto on 17 September 1770: Graphical evidence of extreme magnetic storm

Red auroras were observed in Japan during an extreme magnetic storm that occurred on 17 September 1770. We show new evidence that the red aurora extended toward the zenith of Kyoto around midnight. The basic appearance of the historical painting of the red aurora is geometrically reproduced based on the inclination of the local magnetic field and a detailed description in a newly discovered diary. The presence of the inclined zenith aurora over Kyoto suggests that the intensity of the September 1770 magnetic storm is comparable to, or slightly larger than that of the September 1859 Carrington storm.

  • Effects of the Troposphere on Radio Propagation

This chapter focuses on the effects of the troposphere on radiowave propagation, starting with a definition of the troposphere as a natural layered air medium consisting of different gaseous, liquid, and crystal structures. It then discusses the effects of hydrometeors on radio propagation in the troposphere. Some well‐known hydrometeors are rain, fog, snow, clouds, hail, dew, rime, glaze, blowing snow, and blowing spray. Next, the chapter considers the main characteristics and parameters of atmospheric turbulence and discusses the tropospheric scintillations, as well as the effects of multiple scattering due to the irregular structure of the troposphere. Finally, it presents the link budget design for tropospheric communication links.

  • Context-Preserving, Dynamic Word Cloud Visualization

The proposed method uses context-preserving, dynamic word clouds to illustrate content evolution. It generates a sequence of word clouds in which related words are grouped together. This sequence is then coupled with a trend chart that summarizes content changes so that users can better explore large collections of documents.

  • Lightning phenomena in electric circuits

    1. Originally lightning denoted electric discharges between clouds or between cloud and ground, and, when applied to an electric circuit, the results of such a discharge striking the line. Later it was found that during atmospheric disturbances, such as passing thunder storms, disturbances occurred in electric circuits even without the discharges striking the line. These disturbances — caused by induction — were also classed as “lightning,” and applied to electric circuits, lightning then came to mean all the effects of atmospheric electricity.
