President's report

IEEE Circuits & Systems Magazine, 1983

This year, more so than others, time seems to be flying by at a supernatural rate. I was convinced, for example, that my calendar was committing an act of perjury when it indicated that the time had come to write this second President's Report. After all, only yesterday I was mainlining coffee and burning the midnight oil to write my ...

A new magazine is born

IEEE Circuits & Systems Magazine, 1979

Over the last six years the Circuits and Systems Newsletter has increased in scope, content, and quality to the point where IEEE copyright, indexing, and subscription services are essential. In order to get these services the Administrative Committee of the Circuits and Systems Society voted unanimously last September to seek magazine status for our newsletter. This request was approved by ...

President's report

IEEE Circuits & Systems Magazine, 1983

I assume the office of President with much enthusiasm and optimism that 1983 will be another outstanding year for the Circuits and Systems Society. Before I get too involved with Society business, I would like to express my deep appreciation to Bede Liu for giving us the benefit of his sound leadership, profound vision, and dedicated service as last year's ...

Modern architectures and ASIC implementations for communications applications

2004 International Conference on Communications, Circuits and Systems (IEEE Cat. No.04EX914), 2004

Today i rapidly evolving digital communications infrashrcture has been driven forward by the steady advances in integrated circuits. For economic as well as technical reasons,' the point is rapidly approaching at which IC performance breakthroughs are less likely to derive from semiconductor technology scaling and, more than eve); will have to come from architectural and circuit-design innovations. At the same ...

  • President's report

This year, more so than others, time seems to be flying by at a supernatural rate. I was convinced, for example, that my calendar was committing an act of perjury when it indicated that the time had come to write this second President's Report. After all, only yesterday I was mainlining coffee and burning the midnight oil to write my first report. The phrase often invoked to explain this illusion is “time flies when you're having fun.” I must say that these are exciting times for the Circuits and Systems Society and that I have enjoyed my first half year as the Society President.

  • A new magazine is born

Over the last six years the Circuits and Systems Newsletter has increased in scope, content, and quality to the point where IEEE copyright, indexing, and subscription services are essential. In order to get these services the Administrative Committee of the Circuits and Systems Society voted unanimously last September to seek magazine status for our newsletter. This request was approved by the IEEE Publications Board at its meeting November 30, and thus a new magazine was born.

I assume the office of President with much enthusiasm and optimism that 1983 will be another outstanding year for the Circuits and Systems Society. Before I get too involved with Society business, I would like to express my deep appreciation to Bede Liu for giving us the benefit of his sound leadership, profound vision, and dedicated service as last year's President. I have promised Bede that I will call upon him frequently for advice and keep him very busy as he serves as Past-President.

  • Modern architectures and ASIC implementations for communications applications

Today i rapidly evolving digital communications infrashrcture has been driven forward by the steady advances in integrated circuits. For economic as well as technical reasons,' the point is rapidly approaching at which IC performance breakthroughs are less likely to derive from semiconductor technology scaling and, more than eve); will have to come from architectural and circuit-design innovations. At the same time, major high-tech companies are less focused on cutting-edge research than ever before. Fortunately, university research and startup companies canfill the innovation gap. We present here a number ofnovel architectures and CMOS integrated circuitprototypes we've created at UCLA'and at Pentomics, Inc. Examples covered include: * Direct digital synthesizers * Digital mixers and modulators * Trigonometric interpolators * Rectangular-to- polar converters * Single-chip reconjgurable FFTNFFTprocessors

  • Gradient adaptive equalizer with inherent optimal adjusting step

A simple modification of the classical transversal adaptive equalizer allows automatic attainment of the optimal adjusting step. This paper illustrates this modification and discusses the validity of the resulting equalizer by means of several tests.

  • Symmetric Displacement Algorithms for the Timing Analysis of Large Scale Circuits

Symmetric displacement techniques for the timing analysis of VLSI circuits are introduced. Their numerical properties such as stability and accuracy are investigated on different classes of circuits.

IEEE Guide for Diagnostics and Failure Investigation of Power Circuit Breakers

This guide recommends procedures to be used to perform failure investigations of power circuit breakers. Although the procedure may be used for any circuit breaker, it is mainly focused on high-voltage ac power circuit breakers used on utility systems. Recommendations are also made for monitoring circuit breaker functions as a means of diagnosing their suitability for service condition.
