  • Study on the Self-Organized Pattern in an Atmospheric Pressure Dielectric Barrier Discharge Plasma Jet

    In this paper, a rich variety of self-organized patterns have been observed in a dielectric barrier discharge helium plasma jet generated at atmospheric pressure. It has been found that the evolvement of a discharge pattern in plasma jets is sensitive to diverse experimental parameters, including the applied voltage, the frequency of power, the scale of plasma jet generator, and the gas flow rate. By altering the applied voltage and/or the gas flow rate, the plasma jet is seen to evolve through three modes, which are diffuse- looking discharge, self-organized discharge with regular channels, and unstable discharge with random filaments. Among which, the self-organized discharge mode is characterized with several bright plasma channels stably formed in a straight line. The maximum number of channels is mainly determined by the scale of plasma jet generator. When the frequency is fixed, the minimum distance between two adjacent discharge channels in the self-organized mode is nearly the same, no matter what size tube is selected.

  • Heat integration of the azeotropic distillation system with ANN and GA

    In this paper, an effective method with artificial neural networks (ANN) and a genetic algorithm (GA) was suggested for modeling the azeotropic distillation system with unknown or complex mechanisms and optimizing its operating parameters to save energy. The satisfactory results of this investigation demonstrated the feasibility and effectiveness of the suggested method. Furthermore, the azeotropic distillation system after optimization results in reduction of heat use by 54.03%. Thus, the study provides means for further optimization of the azeotropic distillation system, and directs practical production for process optimization.

  • Fabrication of SnO2/CNTs formaldehyde gas sensor

    Formaldehyde (CHOH) is an important chemical industrial material and organic solvent. Formaldehyde is a harmful gas. It strongly irritates human eyes and nose, and is a carcinogen. Semiconductor gas sensors are cheap to make and easy to use, and can convert the gas concentration directly to electrical signals. There were some reports on formaldehyde gas sensor using semiconductor materials, such as NiO, ZnO/ZnSnO3 etc. Hybrids carbon nanotubes/SnO2 gas sensor was used to detect N2. Carbon nanotubes/WO3 sensor detected NO2 and CO. In this report, a formaldehyde gas sensor was fabricated by a composite of nanometer SnO2 and functionalized multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). The sensitivity of the composite of SnO2/MWCNTs to formaldehyde gas was much improved.
