  • ThinLine Portable Energy Products. A new approach to sealed lead battery technology

Sealed lead-acid cells and batteries have historically been designed using containers with thick plastic walls reinforced with heavy plastic ribs or steel casings to withstand the internal pressure and compression forces required for efficient performance and long life. These design approaches have significantly detracted from the practical energy density and specific energy of sealed lead-acid electrochemistry because of the volume and weight of the passive component materials not participating in energy storage. Here, ThinLine Portable Energy Products present a new approach to the design of sealed lead-acid batteries that reduces the weight and volume of the passive components resulting in much higher specific energy (weight) and energy density (volume). In addition, the planar ThinLine design overcomes the geometric incongruity of packaging round cells into rectangular cases resulting in a 10-25% loss in efficiency.

  • Electrical properties and equalization of lithium-ion cells in automotive applications

This paper explores certain key properties of lithium-ion batteries important for automotive applications. Long-term laboratory tests have been conducted to characterize these cells. The results address state-of-charge measurement and characterization, input-output charge efficiency, and needs and results with charge equalization. The results show that open-circuit voltage can provide a basis for state-of-charge measurement. High input-output energy storage efficiency is a key benefit of Li-ion technology-a vital performance parameter for hybrid vehicles. Charge equalization is an important consideration for Li- ion applications, and active equalization is needed to insure safe operation and deliver long life. Present commercial devices vary significantly among manufacturers.

  • Experiments in fast charging lead acid electric vehicle batteries

Several experiments were conducted at the University of Massachusetts Lowell battery evaluation laboratory in order to measure the battery's charge acceptance ability and the time necessary for it to be charged to reach 80% of its capacity. A high charging current source was connected to the batteries through a data acquisition system. The profiles of the charging current, capacity, temperature and battery impedance were recorded during the test. The time needed for each battery to be charged to 80% and full charge was also recorded. The results show that the charging acceptance varies depending on the type of the battery and its internal impedance. The time necessary to reach 80% of it capacity, as well as full capacity depends on the type of the battery too. Also, the results can be used to size a fast battery charger and the charging algorithm needed.

  • A life indicator of stationary type sealed lead-acid battery

To determine a life span of a sealed lead-acid battery, it is important to measure an internal impedance and an operating temperature. The authors describe a battery life indicator which applies these measurements for overall life determination. The major features are as follows: the life indicator can digitally display the number of remaining years of battery life from installation until the end of life of a sealed lead-acid battery during floating charge, without disconnecting a load from the battery; and the life indicator can be realized by the use of a simple circuitry because a measuring current for internal impedance can be supplied through a commercial transformer without use of an inverter.<<ETX>>

  • State of charge estimator for NiMH batteries

A state of charge estimator for Nickel-Metal Hydride batteries, suitable for hybrid vehicles automotive applications, is proposed. The estimator is based on a statespace dynamic model of the battery which is obtained by modeling the kinetic of reactions and the diffusion phenomena. State of charge is estimated by computing the dynamic behavior of the Ni(OH)/sub 2/ concentrations in the active nickel-hydroxide film and using measurements of current and voltage. The estimator is tested off-line on experimental data and performs good results.
