We discuss transformation of the domains of different dynamics as the number of oscillators grows. Features of the transition from the phase model to the original system are discussed for the case of coupled van der Pol oscillators. Keywords: synchronization, phase oscillators, quasi-periodic dynamics, chaos.

  • Basic Analysis Tools of Spike-Trains in Chaotic Spiking Oscillators

This paper studies three analysis tools of the spike-trains in chaotic spiking oscillators. The first one is the histogram of inter-spike intervals. It is convenient to extract basic information from spike-trains. The second one is the recurrence plot that has potential to extract information hidden in the spike-trains. The third one is the return map of the state variable. It is useful to analyze stability and bifurcation of spike-train generators. We apply these tools to a class of chaotic spiking oscillators and some typical phenomena are demonstrated.

  • A study of an integrate-and-discharge model for parameter measurement with applied symbolic dynamics

An integrate-and-discharge model (IDM) is proposed based on an integrate-and- fire model (IFM). Compare to the IFM, the IDM can get rich dynamics including chaos, phase locking, etc., without using varying threshold modulation. The corresponding relation between output symbolic sequences and parameters (i.e., frequency, amplitude, resistance and capacity) of the IDM is established by applied symbolic dynamics. Moreover, a method of obtaining symbolic sequence as well as an ordering rule is presented. Simulation and circuit experiment have validated the method and the rule. The results of circuit experiment show that frequency resolution can reach up to 0.05Hz in some frequency ranges and amplitude resolution can reach up to 1uA.

  • Chaotic motion of corrugated circular plates

Large deflection theory of thin anisotropic circular plates was used to analyze the bifurcation behavior and chaotic phenomena of a corrugated thin circular plate with combined transverse periodic excitation and an in-plane static boundary load. The nonlinear dynamic equation for the corrugated plate was derived by employing Galerkin's technique. The critical conditions for occurrence of the homoclinic and subharmonic bifurcations as well as chaos were studied theoretically using the Melnikov function method. The chaotic motion was also simulated numerically using Maple, with the Poincaré map and phase curve used to evaluate when chaotic motion appears. The results indicate some chaotic motion in the corrugated plate. The method is directly applicable to chaotic analysis of an isotropic circular plate.
