Abrupt scene change detection based on the temporal activity distributions

Proceedings of APCCAS'96 - Asia Pacific Conference on Circuits and Systems, 1996

In this paper, an abrupt scene change detection algorithm is suggested. The algorithm is developed based on the temporal activity distribution that derived from the temporal subband analysis. Computer simulation results show that the proposed scheme is capable of detecting abrupt scene changes in video sequence accurately and efficiently.

It is known that the islanding may pose hazards to utility personnel and complicate the orderly reconnection of the grid. Hence, in this paper, a new algorithm based on the monitoring of the change in /spl delta/f//spl delta/P/sub L/ to detect the islanding is proposed. By the proposed method, a detection index can be evaluated that serves as a useful reference to activate the protective relays. This approach has been applied to investigate different scenarios, including the loss of grid and the parallel operation. Effects of load change and power-quality disturbances to the detection performance are also examined. From these test results, they help solidify the feasibility and effectiveness of the approach for the applications considered.

  • Target recognition and polarimetric SAR

    This tutorial presents a state-of-the-art survey of advanced applications of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR). Applications include: the detection and recognition of targets in SAR imagery, and the detection of targets under trees (and in the open) using change detection (coherent change detection, full-polarization change detection, etc). A fully polarimetric SAR sensor is described. Models of clutter and targets are developed from analysis of full- polarization SAR imagery. Algorithms for optimum (GLRT) processing of full- polarization data are derived, including the polarimetric whitening filter (PWF) and the polarimetric matched filter (PMF). Polarization-based discrimination features (polarization entropy, anisotropy, etc.) are developed and applied to SAR image terrain classification. Model-based and template- based target recognition systems are described and classifier performance results versus resolution and polarization are summarized for 10-and 20-target classifiers. Super-resolution algorithms are applied to SAR imagery and target recognition performance improvements demonstrated. Multi-polarization and multi-pass change detection algorithms are developed and demonstrated using UHF SAR imagery of targets under trees; fusion of multi-polarization coherent and non-coherent change detection algorithms is demonstrated. The effect of SAR image compression on change detection performance is quantified. Change detection performance using multi-pass VHF SAR imagery of targets under trees is demonstrated using data gathered by the Swedish CARABAS SAR system.

  • Two strategies in the problem of change detection and isolation

    The comparison between optimal sequential and nonsequential (fixed-size sample) strategies in the problem of abrupt change detection and isolation is discussed. In particular, we show that sometimes a simple fixed-size sample algorithm is almost as efficient as an optimal sequential algorithm which leads to a burdensome number of arithmetical operations.

  • Large-scale bidirectional reflectance model for urban areas

    A bidirectional reflectance factor (BRF) model for urban areas for pixel sizes of more than 500 m/spl times/500 m is developed. Possible applications include albedo calculation, improvement of classification, and change detection algorithms, simulated global BRF maps, and refinement of atmospheric correction algorithms. The model combines the BRF effects at several scales (street grid, intermediate-sized objects, and microscale). The authors present modeling results as well as a comparison with measured data. The basic features of the urban BRF are the hotspot and the independence of its shape from wavelength in the range 450 nm/spl les//spl lambda//spl les/2300 nm. An analytical function that approximates the model is proposed for easy implementation and fast computation.
