Despite its highly automated production lines, the industry is becoming less of a mass manufacturer and more of a batch producer with all the corresponding issues that such a move entails. The frequent setup and retooling of the production has led to renewed interest on the subject of learning curve laws and their impact on the productivity of items re- introduced after short periods of time to the product mix. The actual industrial data presented in this paper support the premise that the learning curve phenomenon is present, albeit in a more complex sense, when tile patterns are produced in relatively small batches and the resulting ramp-up is reminiscent of new product setup.

  • Sol-gel-based optical waveguides on LTCC substrates

    The aim of this work is to test the possibility of sol-gel optical waveguides fabrication on ceramic substrates. The silica sol-gel film is chosen for an optical substrate and cladding and a glaze layer as a material for a waveguide core. The presented paper contains results of examination of the optimal chemical composition and process parameters of sol-gel material and the glaze layer. The refractive indexes and thicknesses of the films have been measured. The technology allows to make waveguide in the grooves made in LTCC substrate. The grooves have 137 mum depth and width variable from 100 mum to 1500 mum. The sol-gel/glaze combination have been used to make stripe waveguides in the grooves.

  • The design studies of green earthen ceramic glaze column Dou-shaped lamp

    Dou-shaped lamp originates from the evolution of living vessel which have simple shapes, is convenient to be used and has a long history. It has played an important role in the history of Chinese lamp development. This paper takes green earthen ceramic glaze column Dou-shaped lamp as an example to summarize the evolvement, development and innovation of the Dou-shaped lamp. Prospective study and practicability of the Dou-shaped lamp are appraised objectively from the aspects of the morphological analysis, elements analysis, material technics analysis and culture analysis etc. with means in design. Sustainable development concept of the modern design is discussed from the rational application of resources in Dou-shaped lamp design process, which is the externalization of the harmonious coexistence design thought.

  • Modeling and control of ceramic tile glazing using dimensional analysis

    In this article we make use of dimensional analysis in order to obtain a model for control design purposes. The industrial system to be controlled is the ceramic tile glazing process. The dimensional analysis allows to go beyond first principles modeling and to consider modeling errors. The model obtained is used for feedforward control. Simulation examples show that it is possible to control the deposited glaze mass by just measuring the glaze temperature. However the measurement of the glaze flow results to be a critical variable if high accuracy on the deposited mass is pursued.

  • Unscrambling and developing distillation of Ouyao kiln clture

    Ouyao kiln (a Chinaware kiln in ancient Ou) is a famous celadon kiln born, developed and declined in historical cultural city Wenzhou (called Yongjia county in ancient China). It was set up in Donghan Dynasty, flourishing in Tang Dynasty after the development in Dongjin Dynasty, Xijin dynasty and Nanbei dynasty and declined in Yuan and Song Dynasty for some reasons. So it has a long history and abundant culture connotation. The stipples of brown glaze decoration on Celadon indicate the wisdom, simple goodness and love of life of laboring people for its rusticity and condense. Furthermore, a harbor bureau was set up in Wenzhou in South Song dynasty to administer the newly- opened treaty port. Wenzhou once became a very important port on the ¿China road¿ for its significant contribution on the cross-culture communication, especially the pottery and porcelain culture communication.

  • Resistance Graded Insulators - The Ultimate Solution to the Contamination Problem?

    The results of field experience and greatly increased laboratory test data on Resistance Graded insulators are reported. The continued success of this approach to the solution of severe contamination problems is confirmed. Parameters for future consideration and design of insulators using this approach are given.
