  • A CMOS VLSI chip for filtering of TV pictures in two dimensions

    Low-cost digital transmission of color TV signals over the channels of a future broad-band network (Integrated Services Digital Network, or ISDN) requires data reduction by digital low-pass filters. Low-pass filtering of a TV picture amounts to process pixels which are adjacent in either the horizontal or vertical direction. For this purpose, the pixels must be stored in a delay unit. A VLSI chip with a delay unit is reported that is based on a resettable first-in-first-out (FIFO) memory and a pipelined arithmetic unit. The FIFO concept starts from a three-transistor cell array which is accessed by a pointer and customized to a FIFO memory by suitable second-layer metal wiring. Rather than cascade registers, the FIFO memory can be adapted to different standards by the reset signal for the pointer. The approach results in a regular compact design (80-kbit transistors, 31 mm/SUP 2/). An experimental chip fabricated with 1.5-/spl mu/m CMOS technology operates up to 22 MHz (typical values). A data stream of 22/spl times/32 Mb/s is exchanged between the memory and the arithmetic basic unit.

  • A multicast switching network for B-ISDN

    To support broadband integrated services digital networks (B-ISDN), switching networks must have the ability to provide both multipoint connections (multicasting) and point-to-point connections (unicasting). This paper proposes a multicast switching network based on a recently proposed routing network which consists of two banyan networks with links at every stage to allow cell transfer to and from each banyan plane, thereby offering multiple paths between each input-output pair. The proposed multicast network employs the copy and routing networks in a parallel configuration. This approach allows for unicast cells to proceed to the routing network without additional delay and keeps the copy network free of unicast traffic which results in a larger amount of the multicast requests to be successfully replicated. Using simulations, the proposed multicast network was shown to offer better performance than other networks in terms of cell loss rates.<<ETX>>

  • Enhanced IN call model and protocol for multipoint-multiconnection calls in B-ISDN

    This paper deals with the call model and the intelligent network application protocol (INAP) for an intelligent network (IN) in the broadband-ISDN (B-ISDN). First, we discuss the requirements of a call model and the INAP for B-ISDN. We focus on the relationship with IN Capability Set 2 (CS-2), B-ISDN signalling capability, and service requirements. We then propose a call model that can handle a multiparty-multiconnection call. Our call model is based on the call model for IN CS-2, and reflects B-ISDN signalling capabilities. We also propose some INAP operations for the call model. With these INAP operations, service logic program instances (SLPIs) can be reported when parties or connections are added. SLPIs can also use these INAP operations to instruct call models to add connections and parties. Finally, we describe an example of an IN service that uses the call model and the INAP.

  • Vector quantization of images using fractal dimensions

    In conventional vector quantization (VQ), for example, generalized Lloyd algorithm (GLA), an image is divided into blocks that are all the same size. This uniform division could be redundant. Furthermore, it could not attain both a high compression rate and high quality of encoded image. We propose a new method of VQ in which the block size to divide an image is determined by a local fractal dimension (LDF). Computational experiments were carried out to show the effectiveness of the method. Results of experiments showed that a compression rate of the proposed method is higher than that by the GLA under the condition that PSNR (Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio) is more than 35.0 dB. Therefore, the proposed method is useful for practical image compression.

  • Neuron-based connection acceptance strategy

    A neural system with the back propagation learning algorithm is discussed for making decisions in connection management. The strategy is divided into two developed stages. In the learning stage, we collect three groups of information including the traffic description, QoS requirement, and link status, and then embed them in the input pool. The accept/reject decision for a requested service is generated in the output layer. Upon completing the learning stage, the on-line test is in progress. From the results, we found that the strategy can support the real-time feature in connection management. In addition, the QoS is guaranteed while the connection is permitted under our ATM testbed.
