  • Design and implementation of a miniature polymer ball bearing slide table

    This study presents a novel design and fabrication process to realize a miniature polymer ball bearing slide table (slider) with long linear travel range. The linear slide table consists of a pair of V-shape silicon (111) crystal plane rails, and a suspended slider supported by four polymer ball bearings. The ball-housing on slider is also designed to confine the bearing. The slider, rails, and ball-housings are patterned by DRIE and wet anisotropic etching on double-polished (100) wafer. The ball bearings are fabricated and in-situ self-assembled using the liquid polymer formation technique in buffer liquid. After polymer solidified by UV-curing, the ball bearing is confined in ball-housing. The device is successfully implemented and the traveling test is also demonstrated using magnetic force.

  • Bias in disk drive rotary actuators: characterization, prediction, and compensation

    This paper examines bias, which is the average torque (or current) required to maintain a set actuator position in a disk drive. In this paper, we show that in a disk drive the value of bias depends on several factors including the actuator position, the length of time at the set position, the direction of the actuator motion, the distance traveled by the actuator, the proximity of the set position to locations at which the actuator changed direction, and the proximity of the set position to locations at which the actuator rested. With an adequate prediction of bias, the settling time of a seek can be reduced by properly selecting the initial conditions of the track following controller at the handoff between track seek and track settle. Two prediction algorithms for bias are shown: one based on a series of calibration tests and one based on Dahl's friction model. A method for choosing the initial condition of the integrator of an integral action controller to minimize settling time based on the bias prediction is developed.

In this paper, energy eigenvector of frequency band is got through EMD. Fault diagnosis of bearings is realized by DDAGSVM. The most excellent model parameters are selected based on LOO. The final results indicate that the method based on EMD and DDAGSVM can effectively discriminate different faulty states of bearings.

After, the Weibull parameters (/spl beta/ and /spl eta/) are estimated by the method of moments. This work is currently used for other modes in order subsequently to obtain more precise conclusions when one analyses a Weibull sheet.

  • A novel waveguide Y-junction circulator with a ferrite sphere for millimeter waves

    A novel waveguide Y-junction circulator with a ferrite sphere is developed for uses at millimeter-wave frequencies. Sphere is preferred because the production cost of a pertinent circulator is lower. Performance of the new circulator is comparable to the conventional one with a cylindrical ferrite. A simple formula is derived for determining the center frequency of a circulator. Good agreement between analytical results and measurements is observed. An extremely fast method is developed to analyze the circulator. Various properties of the circulator can be predicted with reasonable accuracy.

  • Optimization of treatment conditions for industrial gears in plasma immersion ion implantation (PIII) using particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation

    Summary form only given. Conventional line-of-sight ion implantation of industrial gears suffers from dose non-uniformity, and plasma immersion ion implantation (PIII) is an excellent alternative. The technique has attracted the interests of engineers and scientists and been applied to the treatment of three-dimensional samples such as ball bearings, oil pumps, and biomedical products. In this paper, we employ particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation to configure the optimal treatment conditions for industrial gears. Owing to the periodic structure of the sawteeth, we need only to examine one tooth using a 2-dimensional model. The particle impact angle and local incident dose along the (r-theta) plane change during each implantation pulse. Therefore, it is important to determine the potential, electric field, and ion density distribution around the gear in order to optimize the implant uniformity and dose. Our simulation results show that most ions are accelerated at a normal angle towards the bottom of the tooth when the plasma sheath thickness is larger than the outer radius of the gear. Our model allows the determination of a suitable range of implantation pulse for different gear dimensions in order to attain better implant dose and energy uniformity on the sidewalls of the tooth.

    This paper deals with a new method called Axial Vibration Analytic Signal applied to Treatment of data for diagnosis the bearing faults of induction motor. This method consists a extracting vibration vectors forms by time- frequency representation. The calculation method based on the cloud points dispersion parameter has two main parts; the first part is the Hilbert transform of axial vibration signals. The second part is the normalization compared to module of AVAS. This method has been applied on the vibration data of a 5.5-kW induction motor test bench.
