In this paper is given a complete report on an investigation of tractive resistances of urban roads to a motor delivery wagon equipped with solid rubber tires. The “tractive resistance” as used in this paper, includes still- air resistance, but does not include wind resistance and the resistances internal to the truck. The test truck is fully described with its driving mechanism and the storage battery which supplied the motive power. The investigation involved test runs over definite lengths of road, at measured truck speeds, to determine the gross battery output during these runs; and laboratory tests to determine the overall efficiency of the truck between battery terminals and rear-wheel treads at speeds and loads corresponding to the road tests. The results included in the paper are (1) overall efficiency of truck mechanism and (2) tractive resistances of a number of typical urban roads. The components of tractive resistance for a typical road are also given.
In three separate deployments from Fall 1984 through Spring 1985 the Neil Brown Instrument Systems' (NBIS) Smart Acoustic Current Meters (SACM) were deployed. In the first deployment, part of NOAA's Delaware Bay Experiment, less than a month of data was returned of approximately eight current meter months of deployment. Hardware problems accounted for most of this poor data return.
This chapter deals with each of three components of battery health management (BHM): battery state estimation, battery prognostics, and decision making. The state‐of‐health (SOH) of batteries is a measurement that reflects the general condition of a battery and its ability to deliver the specified performance compared to a fresh battery. The chapter discusses how to determine the remaining useful life (RUL) of a battery. State estimation techniques, like the extended Kalman filter (EKF), have been applied for real‐time prediction of state‐of‐charge (SOC) and SOH of automotive batteries. A decision‐level fusion of data‐driven algorithms, like Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA) and neural networks, have been investigated for both diagnostics and prognostics. Particle filters (PFs) are a novel class of nonlinear filters that combine Bayesian learning techniques with importance sampling to provide good state tracking performance while keeping the computational load tractable.
Sealed lead-acid cells and batteries have historically been designed using containers with thick plastic walls reinforced with heavy plastic ribs or steel casings to withstand the internal pressure and compression forces required for efficient performance and long life. These design approaches have significantly detracted from the practical energy density and specific energy of sealed lead-acid electrochemistry because of the volume and weight of the passive component materials not participating in energy storage. Here, ThinLine Portable Energy Products present a new approach to the design of sealed lead-acid batteries that reduces the weight and volume of the passive components resulting in much higher specific energy (weight) and energy density (volume). In addition, the planar ThinLine design overcomes the geometric incongruity of packaging round cells into rectangular cases resulting in a 10-25% loss in efficiency.
