    In the United States, the?>photonics community?> is a loosely defined entity consisting of people and companies working in one way or another with lasers and photonics. It includes companies that make lasers and related optical equipment, and the engineers, technicians, scientists, and academics working in the field. In the past quarter century, there have been two major attempts to bring the various elements of the community together for the common good. The first attempt, in the late 1980s and early 1990s, was a conference called OPTCON; the second, in the late 1990s and the first years of the twenty-first century, was the Coalition for Photonics and Optics. The?>proliferating?> conferences were sponsored by the four optics-related professional societies, which in 1987 were the Optical Society of America (OSA), the IEEE Laser and Electro-Optics Society, the Laser Institute of America (LIA), and the International Society for Optics and Photonics (SPIE).

  • Fluorescence guided optical coherence tomography for early detection of epithelial neoplasia

    Summary form only given. Standard clinical diagnosis of oral cancer rely almost exclusively on the visual examination of tissue followed by pathological determinations of tissue biopsies collected from suspected lesions in the oral cavity and upper digestive-tract. The search for more accurate and less invasive method for rapid screening of epithelial tissue and early detection of malignant tissue transformation has significant appeal. Ideally, a method that maintains the existing visualization approach but utilizing a more sensitive imaging capability, while simultaneously adding a quantitative aspect for non-invasive assessment of tissue, could prove to be an extremely powerful technique for early detection of epithelial neoplasia. We investigated the potential for combination of fluorescence spectroscopy and optical coherence tomography (OCT) imaging as a means to detect neoplastic changes in oral cavity tissues. Our goal was to demonstrate that the combined imaging modalities would improve our ability to detect early-stage neoplastic lesions that are not identifiable grossly non-invasively.
