We experimentally demonstrate biorthogonal modulation in 8 dimensions as binary pulse-position modulation polarization-switched QPSK. We compare this format with PM-QPSK at the same bit rate and show a 1.4 dB sensitivity gain and 84 % increased transmission distance.

    We propose new non-separable two dimensional biorthogonal wavelets whose filters are defined on the regular triangular lattice on a plane. Their construction uses lifting in the polyphase representation of the filters. While filters of arbitrary orders may be obtained by following the same way as in 1D case, in this paper we focus our attention mainly on the construction method using a few simple examples. Applying one of the example filters to simple images, we show that isotropy of images are improved in the wavelet transform as compared with the usual tensor product wavelet transform.

We analyze a frame timing acquisition system based on a method which uses a differential detector. By use of the differential detector, the receiver obtains the frame timing information regardless of the transmitted sequence. We analyze the initial acquisition time which takes the probability of false alarm into account. It is found that the rapid increase of the initial acquisition time can be reduced by increasing the number of verifications and by raising the threshold level.

  • Simple Tight Upper Bounds for Average SEP and BEP of Coherent Diversity$M$-ary Biorthogonal Signals Over Fading Channels

    This paper presents simple tight upper bound expressions for the average symbol error probability and bit error probability of coherent M-ary biorthogonal signals over fading channels with diversity reception. The upper bounds, which do not involve numerical integration and are expressed with only elementary functions, can be efficiently evaluated. In addition, they are valid for different diversity-combining techniques, as well as for arbitrarily correlated and/or nonidentically distributed channels. The tightness of the derived upper bounds is clarified under various channel conditions. Numerical results are also provided to demonstrate the impact of nonidentical channels on the system average error performance.

  • Orthogonal Hermite pulses used for UWB M-ary communication

    Orthogonal Hermite pulse shapes used for ultra wideband communication are proposed. The paper suggests that M-ary biorthogonal modulation based on orthogonal Hermite pulse shapes can be used to construct M-ary communication system with higher bit rate. The paper analyses the frequency response of orthogonal Hermite pulses whose regular width meet the FCC standard. A receiver detection of the M-ary biorthogonal system is constructed. Timing jitter has effect on performance of system, which limits the order of Hermite pulse.

  • Biorthogonal filter banks with nearly optimal time-frequency localization

    In this paper we study the time-frequency localization properties of biorthogonal modulated filter banks. The localization of the prototype filter is computed using two different measures. Design examples are presented showing that the lower bound of the uncertainty relation can be nearly reached. We also show that biorthogonal filter banks offer attractive trade- offs between reconstruction delay and time-frequency localization, not allowed when using orthogonal ones.

  • A study on bi-orthogonal modulation for W-CDMA higher bit rate transmission

    This paper studies a modulation method for a wideband code division multiple access (W-CDMA) system in order to enhance its performance. The modulation method studied here introduce bi-orthogonal modulation instead of multicode transmission in order to suppress the envelope variation which comes from code division multiplexing in multicode transmission. Bi-orthogonal modulation studied here selects a single code in both in-phase and quadrature components, and leads to relaxation of the requirement of HPA linearity. This relaxation enhances the implementation of the mobile station (MS) with smaller size or lower power consumption. Computer simulation results show that the power level of spurious emission in the adjacent channel is reduced by approximately 8 dB with use of bi-orthogonal modulation, while keeping the required E/sub b//I/sub o/ almost the same as multicode transmission.

  • Error correction scheme for Multi-carrier CDMA with bi-orthogonal modulation

    In order to reduce out-of-band emission and PAPR for Multi-carrier (MC) CDMA system, bi-orthogonal modulation is one of the efficient schemes. However the performance of the scheme rapidly degrades if Hadamard code selection errors are occurred at the receiver. We propose and examine a frequency domain error correction scheme for the system employing Reed-Solomon (RS) code. This basic concept is that a Forward Error Correction (FEC) code corrects the code selection errors for all the subcarriers. An efficient decoding method that not only code selection error but the transmitted bit error can correct is also examined.
