Birefringence

Birefringence, or double refraction, is the decomposition of a ray of light into two rays when it passes through certain anisotropic materials, such as crystals of calcite or boron nitride. The effect was first described by the Danish scientist Rasmus Bartholin in 1669, who saw it in calcite. The effect is now known to also occur in certain plastics, magnetic materials, various noncrystalline materials, and liquid crystals. (Wikipedia.org)

We achieve impulsive alignment in a 400 K sample of diatomic iodine. Polarization measurements of rotational wave-packet revivals reveal dispersed oscillatory structures. These structures are due to centrifugal distortion resulting from the high temperature.

  • Mueller-matrix tomography of biotissue

    Summary form only given. The polarization tomography features of optically anisotropic architectonic nets of different morphological structure biotissues (BT) have been investigated. The phase tomography (PT) features of skin derma, muscular and bone BT have been experimentally investigated. The interrelation between the PT structure and BT physiological state has been determined. The early diagnostics criteria of the degenerative-dystrophic appearance and pathological changes of the structure of BT optically anisotropic architectonics have been determined: (i) Optical anisotropy of physiologically normal myometry is not practically apparent- the PTs represent a quasi- homogeneous field with several fluctuations /spl Delta/n(X,Y) /spl ap/ 10/sup -5/. This points to a rather amorphous optical structure of BT, i.e., to "lack of development" of myometry collagen net. (ii) The phase component topology of the diffusely changed myometry architectonics is formed by the areas with inhomogeneous distribution of birefringence /spl Delta/n(X,Y), the values of which vary from 1.2 /spl times/ 10/sup -4/ to 1.1 /spl times/ 10/sup -3/ respectively. (iii) The tumor-forming processes are accompanied by the formation of "anisotropy zones", within which the birefringence value of architectonics increases by two orders and reaches the level of 2.5 /spl times/ 10/sup -3/.

It yields the absolute value and the uniformity of the birefringence /spl Delta//spl beta/(z)=d/spl Phi//dz.

    In this contribution we present the status of the BMV experiment whose goal is to measure the vacuum magnetic birefringence. The measurement of this birefringence to a precision of a few ppm will represent a pure QED test.
