In telecommunications and computing, bit rate (sometimes written bitrate, data rate or as a variable R) is the number of bits that are conveyed or processed per unit of time. The bit rate is quantified using the bits per second (bit/s or bps) unit, often in conjunction with an SI prefix such as kilo- (kbit/s or kbps), mega- (Mbit/s or Mbps), giga- (Gbit/s or Gbps) or tera- (Tbit/s or Tbps). This chapter describes requirements and objectives for the initial MPEG‐2 systems development. It also discusses evolutionary role of the MPEG‐2 systems standard on the standardization efforts undertaken by MPEG after MPEG‐2 and the produced amendments to MPEG‐2 systems. The produced amendments caused an evolution of the MPEG‐2 systems standard that was driven by technology and associated market expectations for optical media and broadcast applications. The chapter also presents an overview of all standards produced by MPEG until October 2013.

  • Perceptual coding of speech using a fast wavelet packet transform algorithm

    This paper presents a new speech coding algorithm based on a fast wavelet packet transform algorithm and psychoacoustic modeling. The employed FFT-like overlapped block orthogonal transform allows us to approximate the auditory critical band decomposition in an efficient manner, which is a major advantage over previous approaches. Owing to such a decomposition of the original signal, we make use of the human ear masking properties to decrease the mean bit rate of the encoder.

  • Soft-decision decoding of binary block codes in CELP speech coding

    It is shown that the residual codebook in CELP speech coders can be replaced with a spherical code derived from an error-correcting code with low encoding complexity. Fast soft-decision decoding algorithm for binary block codes is modified to search the closest code vector in the spherical code. The quantization is done adaptively in the spectral domain in order to concentrate the quantization power on the most important components according to the LPC- parameters.
