  • Likelihood surface preprocessing with the JPDA algorithm: Metron data set

    This paper presents tracking results on the Metron data set using the JPDA algorithm and a preprocessing likelihood surface formulation. The Metron data set is a simulated data set and is designed to be very difficult with large bearing and range errors which leads to high localization error for true detections. There are also significant amounts of clutter. Results using other data association algorithms such as the PDA, PDAFAI, and PDAFAIwTS were not good, which led to the use of a likelihood surface. The preprocessing step using the likelihood surface is key for achieving reasonable results. For the baseline tracking scenario where the truth is known, the results were encouraging. Extending this technique to include acoustic modeling and Doppler information will be topics of future research.

  • Impulsive noise suppression in DFT-SOFDM system

    The DFT-SOFDM is a high date rate underwater acoustic transmission scheme even for underwater military communication. It has been widely studied to overcome the complexity of underwater acoustic channels. Generally speaking, multi- carrier transmission systems have many obvious advantages. They are less sensitive to impulsive noise than single-carrier systems. The longer symbol duration provides an advantage in a presence of impulsive noise. Nevertheless, it was recently recognized that this advantage turns into a disadvantage, if the impulsive noise energy exceeds a certain threshold. In this paper, nonlinearity methods for impulsive noise suppression in DFT-SOFDM receivers are considered. The experimental results of this comparative study show that the blanking nonlinearity performs better than the clipping nonlinearity.

  • A nondamaging beam blanking SEM test method and its application to highly integrated devices

    The origin of damage causing radiation in a beam blanking scanning electron micrograph (BBSEM) was identified and removed for single-event upset (SEU) testing. The improved BBSEM was successfully used to locate SEU sensitive areas in highly integrated silicon devices.

  • A video system for transmitting hidden pictures based on CCITT T.4 2-D compression

    The use of vertical blanking intervals in a PAL video signal for transmitting an animation of 112/spl times/128 dots of black and white picture is proposed. Data compression based on CCITT T.4 2-D standard and low data rate of 500 kbit/sec are chosen to make the hardware design of an inserter and decoder economically feasible to using an 8-bit microcontroller. The inserter is designed to hide 48 bytes of compressed data, generated by a personal computer, within lines 7 to 22 of a PAL video signal. The decoder can extract these data, decompress and display the hidden picture on the lower right position of a normal TV screen. The basic building blocks of these two devices will be described. This system can be used to provide a Sign Language Closed Caption service.

    In this paper we combine advanced STAP algorithms and concepts for adaptive guard channels with subarrayed linear arrays together with the theoretical results available in the field of adaptive detection (GLRT, AMF, ACE tests). The aim is to define a robust adaptive sidelobe blanking detector against combined impulse and CW interference as well as strong clutter discretes. For the selection of the thresholds, the detection margin is used as a direction dependent tool instead of the commonly used main and guard channel antenna patterns.
