  • An Ensemble-Based Named Entity Recognition Solution for Detecting Consumer Products

    This paper presents a technical description of a solution for International Conference on Data Mining 2012 Contest - Consumer Products number 1. The Contest provided a dataset including thousands of text items, a product catalog with over fifteen million products, and hundreds of manually annotated product mentions to support data-driven approaches. The task was to identify product mentions within a large user-generated web-based textual corpus and disambiguate the mentions against the large product catalog. The solution consists of an ensemble-based algorithm for processing a textual content. It uses Conditional Random Fields and a special approach which recognizes product mentions. This solution finished in the third place in the contest.

  • Intelligent consumer products-past, present and future

    The last 20 years have seen a major change in the design and operation of consumer products as well as the introduction of new products. The driving force behind each of these developments has been the increasing availability at reducing the real cost of electronics and associating processing power. This has enabled the introduction of higher levels of control and increased functionality into what were primarily mechanical systems and has also resulted in a range of totally new products which would not be achievable by any other means. The results of incorporating electronics and associated software has therefore been to produce a range of consumer products which are inherently 'mechatronic' in nature, placing demands upon their designers to achieve high levels of integration between the electronic, mechanical and software elements in their construction. In order to understand the developments that have taken place as a result of the introduction of electronics, the development of a particular and common consumer product, namely the washing machine, is considered.<<ETX>>

  • Database Functionality for the Environmental Assessment of Consumer Products

    McDonough Braungart Design Chemistry, MBDC, is a consulting firm dedicated to revolutionizing industries to ensure that products are reusable in biological or industrial cycles. MBDC analyzes the entire supply chain of materials used to make its products. All the data concerning a product is stored in a database maintained by MBDC. Prior to this project, employees of MBDC would manually sketch a map of a product's supply chain to chart ingredient relationships, identify missing links of information, indicate ingredient assessment status, and display results. The project team has created a tool that allows MBDC to automatically view the status of data in the assessment process as well as any missing links of supplier information. If MBDC has completed assessment of the material, the tool provides indicators concerning the results of the assessment. MBDC works with a large amount of customers and it would be very beneficial if they could spend more time working directly with customers versus spending time on routine work. Using the Systems methodology throughout the project, the team first worked with MBDC to understand the requested functionalities of the database and then created a list of requirements based on the functionalities. Based on the requirements, the team generated over twenty alternatives. Evaluation and client input resulted in the selection of the best alternative. The team has constructed a functional prototype of the final system which, based on testing, meets all of the high priority requirements. Based on MBDC estimates of the amount of time saved per project with this tool, the team calculated that it will save the company 2,000 hours a year (Bolton, 2006).

  • Registration of the Three-Dimensional Shape of Consumer Products as Trademarks in the EU [IP Corner]

    Under current European Union (EU) law, it is possible to register not only traditional marks, such as word and figurative marks, but also nontraditional marks, such as colors and three-dimensional (3-D) shapes. Such a 3-D trademark for the shape of a consumer product constitutes an attractive asset for a manufacturer, since such trademark protection-unlike design or patent protection, for example-is potentially infinite in duration. At the same time, a 3-D trademark provides the manufacturer with a monopoly on such a shape for certain goods, allowing it to effectively prosecute infringements by competitors. This article will provide some basic guidance in light of recent case law of the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) related to the hurdles companies must overcome to register the shapes of their products as 3-D trademarks in the EU.

This attitude not only hinders users but turns attention from the engineering design of interfaces to the psychology of usability. The author argues, with examples, that there is ample scope for the improvement of interfaces through better engineering.<<ETX>>

  • Automatic price calculation of consumer products using SURF with texture matching

    Many department stores in Thailand do not fully pass-through payments to check the total price before a purchase is made. The adoption of automatic price calculation can help to overcome this problem in future, and the customers can move their shopping cart to pass-through over a self-service payment. This paper presents an automatic price calculation of consumer products as images using an integration of the Speeded Up Robust Features (SURF) with texture matching. Various consumer products with several shapes were taken by the researcher to create a Consumer Product (CP) database, comprising 116 images. This database included three main different types of product: snacks, face care, and skin care. In order to evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm, two experiments as non-overlapping and 20% overlapping were conducted in this study to test the accuracy of the calculation of total consumer product prices. Results indicated that the accuracy of the proposed algorithm is 100%.
