    This paper proposes a focusing method based on multiple scanning of a device surface to be observed, which is particularly-suitable for a fast-mechanical- scanning and phase-sensitive laser probe for radio frequency (RF) surface and bulk acoustic wave (SAW/BAW) devices. When high spatial resolution is required for the observation, one needs an objective lens of large magnifying power with extremely shallow focal depth. Accordingly, an uneven surface and tiny inclination of a BAW device cause acquired images a considerable defocus, by which it is difficult to obtain precise and reliable field quantities related to acoustic waves in the device. The proposed method is shown to be most effective in avoiding this sort of defocus and able to focus the entire surface. By this method, for example, we could clearly observe power leakage in an FBAR structure.

    Lithium tetraborate Li/sub 2/B/sub 4/O/sub 7/ (LBO) single crystal is a superior substrate material for surface acoustic wave and bulk acoustic wave devices due to its fairly high electromechanical coupling factor and zero temperature coefficient of frequency in [110] plane. In this paper, Bridgman growth of large size LBO crystals is presented from an industrial point of view. The improvements and advantages of the modified Bridgman method are discussed. Mass production of /spl Phi/3 4 LBO boules has been realized in our laboratory. The fabrication of SAW devices based on LBO wafers is introduced briefly.

    This paper describes a focus adjustment system particularly designed for the fast-mechanical-scanning and phase-sensitive laser probe for radio frequency (RF) surface and bulk acoustic wave (SAW/BAW) devices. When high spatial resolution is necessary for the observation, one needs an objective lens of large magnifying power with extremely shallow focal depth. Then a tiny inclination of a measurement device may cause severe defocus resulting in blurred images. We installed the focus adjustment system in the laser probe, and showed that even there is the inclination, high quality information of the wave field can be acquired without slowing down the scanning speed. The laser probe with the focus adjustment function is applied to the characterization of RF SAW devices operated in 2 GHz range. It is shown the spatial resolution better than 0.5 mum is obtainable.

  • Investigation on nonlinear distortion of acoustic devices for radio-frequency applications and its supression

    In this paper, we discuss the nonlinear performance difference between surface acoustic wave (SAW) and bulk acoustic wave (BAW) resonators, which are inter- modulation-distortion (IMD) and triple-beat (TB) products, and indicate the importance to reduce even-order nonlinearity of BAW resonator. Then, we were able to validate the accuracy and efficiency of our proposed simulation technique on BAW devices by comparing our simulation with experimental data. We verified that our circuit model is a high-performance tool that can be used to predict BAW device nonlinearities. Finally, we produced the thin film bulk acoustic resonator (FBAR) duplexer with highly linear performances for wideband code division multiple access (WCDMA) band 1.

  • On the bulk wave excitation by scattering of surface acoustic waves at a groove: an interior perturbation approach

    In planar bulk acoustic wave devices, an interdigital transducer (IDT) is generally used as the source of excitation. Grooves, which convert an incident SAW (surface acoustic wave) to bulk waves and vice versa, also have the potential to be used as an alternative (if secondary) source of excitation. A typical shallow rectangular groove etched into a crystalline substrate perpendicular to the propagation direction is considered. the groove is modeled as an interior perturbation to the substrate. Coupled-mode equations are developed and solved for the reflected SAW and the scattered bulk waves. The results are compared to those of the half-space geometry. The interior- perturbation approach produces a good match with earlier published results that used the boundary-perturbation method.<<ETX>>

  • Theoretical and experimental evidence for superior intrinsic Q of STW devices on rotated Y-cut quartz

    Several advantages of STW devices are by now well known. These include simultaneous moderately high acoustic velocity and zero temperature coefficient of frequency, along with extremely high power handling capability. In this paper we present theoretical and experimental evidence of an additional advantage of STW devices on quasi-AT-cut quartz: the intrinsic Q of such devices is superior to that of ST-cut SAW devices and AT-cut BAW devices, with the STW having Q/spl times/f/spl ap/3.25/spl times/10/sup 13/ Hz.

  • New orientations for bulk-acoustic-wave devices

    Several new materials/orientations for which strong BAW (bulk acoustic wave) response is predicted are presented. These new materials/orientations have much lower insertion losses and therefore present the possibility of superior BAW devices. The results also point out some correspondence between pseudo-SAW and bulk acoustic waves. The pseudo-SAW waves cannot theoretically exist in a semiinfinite piezoelectric half-space. The presence of a pseudo-SAW pole with high coupling coefficient (related to the residue of the pole) indicates a strong bulk wave being launched into the medium.<<ETX>>
