2020 IEEE International Symposium on Antennas and Propagation and North American Radio Science Meeting

The joint meeting is intended to provide an international forum for the exchange of information on state of the art research in the area of antennas and propagation, electromagnetic engineering and radio science


2020 IEEE Radio and Wireless Symposium (RWS)

RWW2020 will be an international conference covering all aspects of radio and wireless. RWW2020's multidisciplinary events will bring together innovations that are happening across the broad wireless spectrum. RWS2020, this conference application, acts as the main conference for the entire RWW of events that includes the following conferences: PAWR2020, SiRF2020, WiSNet2020, and TWiOS2020 (IEEE Topical Conference on RF/microwave Power Amplifiers, IEEE Topical Meeting on Silicon Monolithic Integrated Circuits in RF Systems, IEEE Topical Conference on Wireless Sensors and Sensor Networks, and IEEE Topical Workshop on the Internet of Space IoS, respectively). In addition to traditional podium presentations and poster sessions, tracks for IEEE Distinguished Lectures, Sunday half-day workshops, Monday panels, and a demo session are planned. A RWW2020 plenary talk are a parallel IoT Summit are planned. A student competition is also planned.

  • A systematic design formulation for Butler matrix applied FFT algorithm

    A systematic general design formulation for a Butler matrix (<tex>B</tex>matrix) is described. The<tex>B</tex>matrix design problem discussed is used to determine phase shift location and value in a matrix, when the number of beam (elements of array)<tex>M = 2^{N}</tex>and the scattering matrix for the hybrid couplers are specified. The design formulation presented is based on the fact that a<tex>B</tex>matrix design procedure and an FFT algorithm are equivalent in fundamental concepts. It is shown that the<tex>B</tex>matrix design procedure can be systematically formulated by the FFT algorithm modifications, which preserves the topological properties of the original signal flow diagram. A simple design formula has been established by this formulation.

  • Length reduction of a short-slot directional coupler in a single-layer dielectric substrate waveguide by removing dielectric near the side walls of the coupler

    A method for reducing the size of a short-slot directional coupler by changing the dielectric constant near the side walls in the coupled region is proposed. The coupled length can be reduced by 51 % for the hybrid and by 57 % for the cross coupler, respectively. The distance between the couplers is also shortened, and the total size of the Butler matrix is reduced by 48 %.

    This paper describes the modelling and analysis of a new smart antenna concept. The paper outlines the rational for the development of a dynamically reconfigurable smart antenna system without greatly increasing the complexity of the system. The subject smart antenna system is developed to offer good coverage and capacity using multiple beams throughout a cell sector and to be able to reconfigure the beam to provide enhanced coverage and maintain capacity in certain areas at reduced, but acceptable coverage throughout the rest of the cell sector of a mobile telecommunication network. The motivation behind the architecture and the methodology used is discussed and then modelling and analysis of the antenna system is presented.

  • Novel two-layer 4×4 SIW Nolen matrix for multi-beam antenna application in Ku band

    A novel two-layer architecture is proposed for a 4times4 Nolen matrix in SIW technology. The matrix employs a newly developed two-layer SIW coupler offering independent control of the transmission phase and the coupling level. Simulated results show very good agreement between calculated and theoretical amplitude and phase output excitation laws with maximum amplitude error of 0.9 dB and 1.6deg phase error, while return and isolation losses are below 16 dB at 12.5 GHz.

  • Asymmetric coupled-line directional coupler for application in 4 ×4 Butler matrix

    A coupled-line single-section directional coupler has been design in asymmetric multilayer dielectric structure. Since in such structures capacitive and inductive coupling coefficients are not equal, a recently developed compensation technique has been used to improve the coupler's electrical parameters. The presented approach has been verified by simulations of a 3-dB coupled-line directional coupler operating at f0= 24 GHz. The designed coupler has been used as a basic component of a 4 × 4 Butler matrix. The obtained performance of the Butler matrix has been verified by EM simulation of the network.
