  • The study of EMG signals during sitting postures in Muslim prayer

    Electromyography (EMG) signals at the lower limb muscles on static posture of sitting during solat had been studied based on the sayings of Prophet Muhammad (hadiths) about this particular posture. Gastrocnemius and Tibialis Anterior were the chosen muscles as both are the major muscles of the lower leg. A group of 10 subjects had participated in this study. The EMG data signal results were analyzed statistically using the Paired-Samples T Test. The statistical results showed that Sitting of Tawarruk has better EMG level on lower limb muscles than Sitting of Iftirasy while Paired-Samples T Test shows that there are no significant differences between both Sittings at the Right Gastrocnemius, Right Tibialis Anterior and Left Tibialis Anterior muscles during the postures. However, there is a significant different on Left Gastrocnemius muscles based on the EMG results for both postures. This significant different on the Left Gastrocnemius is due to the stabilization of the muscles activities for both sides of leg during the sitting postures. Thus, these postures showed by the Prophet Muhammad SAW during the solat should not have adverse effect to the lower muscles studied.

  • Reducing whole-body vibration of vehicle drivers with a new sitting concept

    A new car seat design, which allows the back part of the seat (BPS) to lower down while a protruded cushion supports the lumbar spine, was quantitatively tested to determine its effectiveness in reducing whole-body vibration (WBV) in automobile drivers. Results on 12 drivers show that, by reducing contact between the seat and the ischial tuberosities (TTs), the new seating design reduced both contact pressure and amplitude of harmful vibrations transmitted through the body. Significant reduction of WBV, in terms of RMS and VDV, was found as large as 30% by this seating design (P < 0.05), especially at lumbar spine region. This reduction in WBV allows more sustained driving than permitted by conventional seating devices, by around 2 hours daily, before reaching harmful WBV levels. The new seating design also promotes improved posture by restoring normal spinal curvature. Such seating devices, implemented in cars, buses, large trucks, and other high-vibration vehicles, may effectively reduce the risk of musculoskeletal disorders among long term drivers.

  • Side-approach Transfer Measurement for Patient with Spinal Cord Injuries

    The purpose of this study is to clarify the side-approach transfer ability of spinal cord injury (SCI) patients. We have evaluated SCI patient's skill and muscle strength when performing the transfer motion by imaging the movements involved in each patient's transfer motion and measuring the floor reaction forces. It is understand that patients can not use their stomach muscle strength and both legs. The usage of both hands is important for SCI patient in transfer motion. In this study, we propose the force direction of left hand in each three period (trunk up period T1, buttock up period T2, and buttock down period T3) in order to analyze the transfer motion. SCI patients can raise their hip high and perform transfer easily by inclining their body greatly. So we estimate the inclination degree of the trunk using side-view image during transfer motion. Using the force direction of left hand and the inclination degree of the body, medical staffs can evaluate the skills of the side-approach transfer motion for each patient.

The design process based on the ideal of female physical beauty was described, including decision making of the popular features of physical beauty, the choice of design techniques, and the application of principles and elements of design.

  • Estimation and improvement of foot pressure measurement system for standing-up motion in elderly

    In general, the sit-to-stand movement is common in daily life; however, it is difficult for some elderly people because of weakened muscular strength. Therefore, it is important to provide these patients with feedback regarding their posture and help them stand effortlessly. A motion capture system is one of the best devices to measure posture; however, it is difficult to use in daily life. Consequently, we propose a new measurement system to estimate posture during the sit-to-stand movement using foot pressure, which can be readily used in daily life. In this study, we compared the data obtained using our measurement system with those obtained by motion capture. In addition, we used the inverted pendulum model to reduce the error in the horizontal component of our measurement system.

  • In vivo characterization of buttock soft tissue using quasi-linear viscoelastic modeling

    In vivo characterization of buttock soft tissue was performed. Four characteristic parameters of soft tissue loading response were extracted from the quasi-linear viscoelastic (QLV) model and were compared. The results showed that the method, using the computer automated seating system and the QLV model, is suitable for studying buttock tissue properties in vivo across different populations.

  • Interface pressure and pelvic movement during wheelchair propulsion

    A method to study the relationship between the pelvic movement and the pressure distribution at tissue/support interface during wheelchair propulsion is described. Five normal subjects were recruited for this study. Dynamic interface pressures were measured using a resistive type pressure mat. Pelvic tilt and the locations of the ischial tuberosities were calculated from the 3D positions of the pelvic anatomical landmarks: left and right anterior superior iliac spines (ASIS) and the mid-point between the two posterior superior iliac spines (PSIS). Pelvic tilt during propulsion was found to be in the range of 13.2/spl plusmn/1.6 degrees. The peak pressures loci during dynamic condition apparently followed a movement trajectory in front of the ischial tuberosities (IT). The results indicated that dynamic pressure distribution might be another important parameter to consider in pressure sore prevention regime.

  • The study of pressure distribution in sitting position on cushions for patient with SCI (Spinal Cord Injury)

    Pressure sore is a serious problem for patients with spinal cord injuries (SCI). Many kinds of pressure-relieving cushions have been developed to distribute the weigh evenly and widely. We measured the buttock pressure distribution on five kinds of wheelchair cushions in six SCI patients using the Tekscan pressure measurement system. We calculated total weight, high- pressure area, and maximum and average pressure to evaluate the function of the cushions. As for pressure distribution, the air cushion is the best of the five cushions. In the air cushion, the maximum pressure is influenced by the total weight, contact area, and the quantity of air in the cushion. Further, we measured the buttock pressure distribution on the air cushion in 13 SCI patients. The maximum pressure is one of the most important parameters in the adjustment of the air quantity in the air cushion. After using the multiple regression analysis, it has been shown that the maximum pressure is influenced by both the total weight and the total area.

  • Prediction sit-to-stand movement using trunk angle and lower limb EMG for assist system

    In this study, we propose a method of prediction of sit-to-stand movement for an assist system. The proposed method enables the prediction of sit-to-stand movement before the buttocks leave the seat. To verify the accuracy of the proposed method, we conducted evaluation experiments on five subjects to determine whether the movement is sit-to-stand or another movement. The evaluation results showed that the movement was predicted with an average accuracy exceeding 95%. Furthermore, we developed a sit-to-stand movement assist system using the proposed method.
