    In this study, fluorapatite (FA) was synthesized by using microwave irradiation with various molarity of P/F. Duck eggshells was used as calcium source due to the high percentage of calcium carbonate. The obtained fluorapatite was characterized by using XRD, FTIR and SEM-EDX. Based on the result, fluorapatite was successfully obtained shown by the formation of FA peak in x-ray diffraction pattern and the presence of hydroxyl functional group in liberation mode in FTIR spectra. Moreover, the higher P/ F molar ratio forms more FA peaks and tends to decreased the intensity of calcium oxide (CaO) and calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2).. The optimum FA was formed at the highest P/F molar ratio of 12 that is supported by EDX results with Ca/P and P/F ratio close to the theory.

  • Thin film superconductors grown by laser ablation of PbO and BiPbSrCaCuO

    The growth of thin films of Pb-doped BiSrCaCuO by laser ablation is described. The authors use for the first time, the laser ablation technique to ablate multilayers of both doped BiPbSrCaCuO and PbO. In common with other BiPbSrCaCuO films grown by alternative routes, the layers produced still require an ex situ annealing step, although the presence of a nearby Pb-rich solid was not required. A mixture of both 2223 and 2212 phases is found in the films, exhibiting T/sub c,onset/ of 110 K and T/sub c,zero/ of 81 K.<<ETX>>

    Summary form only given. We present ultrafast all-optical pump-probe and complementary optical-pump terahertz-probe measurements that are suggestive of mixed-phase dynamics in the nominally ferromagnetic metal state of colossal magnetoresistive thin films.

  • Nitrogen and phosphorus recovery from a piggery wastewater treatment facility

    The study demonstrated that the aeration of piggery wastewater enhanced the degree of phosphorus and ammonia precipitation (struvite) from the liquid phase. A bench scale reactor was used to evaluate the applicability of the struvite crystallization process to the effluent. The aeration of piggery wastewater leads to decreased phosphorous, ammonia, electrical conductivity and alkalinity due to the precipitation of Ca and Mg phosphate compounds. The degassing process also leads to the volatilization of ammonia and an increase in pH. Therefore, the feasibility of phosphate and ammonia recovery by struvite crystallization in a fluidized bed reactor from the effluent of a piggery waste water treatment facility was discussed. The phosphorous removal efficiency was measured in experiments with varying ammonia concentrations and NH/sub 4/-N/PO/sub 4/-P ratios. At an initial phosphorus concentration range under 40 mg/1 and NH/sub 4/-N/PO/sub 4/-P under 7, the removal efficiency reached about 80% and fine particles were decreased in the effluent.

  • Neuron protective constituents from rheum nanum and rheum sublanceolatum

    The neuron protective activity of the chemical constituents from Rheum nanum and Rheum subienceotetum in vitro was investigated using cultured embryonic mouse cortical cells exposed to oxygen-glucose deprivation. The protective effect was quantitatively evaluated by measuring the lactate dehydrogenase release rate. Most of the compounds reduce the lactate dehydrogenase release rate, including emodin, chrysophanol-8-O-β-D-glucopyranoside, 6-hydroxymusizin-8-O-β-D-glucopyranoside, gnetin C, torachrysone-8-O-β-D-glucopyranoside, and maesopsin, and all possess potent neuron protective activity. Chrysophanol and aloe-emodin exhibit neuron protection only at low concentrations. Emodin-8-O-β-D-glucopyranoside protects the neuron cells at high concentration. Aloe-emodin-8-O-β-D-glucopyranoside is inactive.
