  • Study on the latency efficient IFFT design method for low latency communication systems

    In this paper, we propose latency efficient Inverse Fast Fourier Transform (IFFT) design method reducing the latency of IFFT output through the reordering of IFFT input data from the resource element mapper to IFFT input signal. The IFFT core consumes a significant percentage for high speed communication systems such as Long Term Evolution (LTE). So, IFFT processor in the physical layer implementations of baseband modem which is important component since IFFT processors require large amount of area and processing power. Also, IFFT has quite long latency from IFFT input data to output data. Therefore latency efficient IFFT is needed for providing various applications such as real time service without latency. Proposed IFFT architecture reduces IFFT output data delay through the reduction of IFFT memory size and butterfly operation (e.g. addition / subtraction). Third Generation Partnership Project - Long Term Evolution (3GPP - LTE) systems use 2048-point FFT processor in the 20MHz bandwidth. Thus, input signal of the IFFT processor corresponding to guard band are assigned as null (`0'). Based on the fact that there are many null as an input signals of IFFT, a hardware and latency efficient IFFT design method for low latency communication systems like 5G LTE is proposed. To verify the performance of the proposed algorithm, 2048 point FFT with radix-2 based SDF structure is used.

An initial design is described for the IEEE 802.16 WiMAX 3.5 GHz band that achieves a reflection coefficient of <; -10 dB, an omnidirectional radiation pattern, low cross polarisation and good gain for potential application in wireless communication systems. The design was fabricated and experimental results obtained that confirm the simulations.

  • Comparative Analysis of BER Performance for Direct Detection and Coherent Detection FSO Communication Systems

    Free space optical (FSO) propagation over atmospheric turbulence affected by fluctuations in both intensity as well as in phase of received signal. This result decreases electrical signal to noise ratio (SNR) and because of this degradation it impaired performance. In this paper, we are discuss a comparative analysis of bit error rate (BER) performance for the on-off keying (OOK) modulated direct detection and coherent detection FSO communication systems in weak turbulence conditions. We present a statistical channel model called as log-normal distribution to describe the irradiance fluctuations in weak turbulence for FSO communication systems. First, we investigate performance of the direct detection FSO system over the log-normal turbulence channel and derived the closed form expression for BER in term of average received irradiance and SNR, and then we do same for coherent detection FSO system, finally, compare both of them.

  • Application Specific Instruction Set Processor Design for Underwater Acoustic Communication Systems

    Underwater acoustic communication systems need Doppler compensation for the server Doppler effects. OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) is widely applied in the underwater acoustic communication systems. FFT is the most computational kernels in the OFDM systems. By exploring the two typical digital signal processing kernels and other basic kernels, an ASIP (Application Specific Instruction set Processor) has been proposed. The proposed composite function unit can reach high MOPS in most DSP kernels with less read/write ports. Also, the proposed composite function unit reduce the memory access and register file access of the FFT, which is the bottleneck of the certain implementation of the FFT. The clock speed of the proposed ASIP can reach up to 600MHz under the CMOS 90nm technology.
