  • Optimal Motion Cueing for Race Cars

    The application of optimal control to simulator motion cueing is examined. Existing motion cueing algorithms are hampered by the fact that they do not consider explicitly the optimal usage of simulator workspace. In this paper, numerical optimal control is used to minimize simulator platform acceleration errors, while explicitly recognizing the confines of the workspace. Actuator constraints are included and the impact of restricted actuator performance is thereby facilitated. The solution of open-loop optimal control calculations are also used as a baseline against which to compare the commonly employed linear quadratic Gaussian (LQG) and model predictive control-based techniques. The limitations of these methods are identified and two additional modules are introduced to the LQG algorithm to improve its performance.

It is shown that the car's suspension motion can have a significant impact on the aerodynamic performance of the vehicle. Optimal control calculations are used to illustrate the impact of aero- suspension interactions and adjustments on the lap-time performance of the car.

  • Cooperative Driving With a Heavy-Duty Truck in Mixed Traffic: Experimental Results

    This paper describes the implementation and testing of a Cooperative Adaptive Cruise Control (CACC) strategy on a heavy-duty truck. The adopted control strategy utilizes additional information exchange through wireless communication to improve the vehicle-following behavior achieved by the underlying adaptive cruise controller (ACC). The control method is evaluated in a mixed traffic condition. It is shown that the truck can perform smooth predecessor following in most of the test scenarios, even for small intervehicle distances. Furthermore, the results demonstrate how string stability is affected by wireless communication imperfections and acceleration (deceleration) limitations of the heavy-duty truck in an inhomogeneous platoon.

  • Preliminary design of vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) UAV with steerable vertical thrust effect

    This paper presents the preliminary design of an aerial vehicle testbed based on the GFS-UAV implementation, namely the “CoandaJLTCraft”. The modified GFS- UAV design uses the Coanda principle to provide lift with enough Vertical Thrust (VT) generated by the Coanda flow. The lift coefficient of the Coanda profile is investigated in our laboratory. A novel steerable design is introduced. This novel design provides an alternative for directional controls and for enhancing the flight stability. Our experiment shows that the steerable configuration is valid up to 10 m/s of Coanda surface flow speed for indoor applications.

  • Multiple-frequency reception with a priority channel

    A requirement for multiple frequency reception is placed on many mobile radio systems. The disadvantages of the present multiple frequency monitoring methods are reviewed and the design considerations of a new unique technique which overcomes these limitations are presented. Basically, this method utilizes sampling or time-sharing to always assure reception of the system's primary channel.

  • A novel circularly polarized dsrc band square microstrip antenna using minkowski fractal structure for vehicular communication

    This paper proposes the design of a novel Minkowski circularly polarized square microstrip fractal antenna to operate within the full range of 75MHz DSRC band (Dedicated Short-Range CommunicationsIEEE 802.11p) with the center frequency at 5.9GHz for vehicle to vehicle communication purpose in an Intelligent Transport System (ITS). Compared to the conventional square patch, the use of Minkowski fractal reduces the overall area of the patch considerably at 5.9GHz with 7.4dBi Gain. More than 3dB Gain is maintained throughout a Bandwidth of 600MHz (5.6GHz to 6.2GHz). Axial Ratio of the antenna is also achieved below 3dB for the entire 267MHz Bandwidth from 5.73GHz to 6GHz.

  • Exploiting multiuser diversity with quality of service for heterogeneous users

    Opportunistic scheduling schemes maximizes the aggregate capacity by using multiuser diversity. Users are chosen to serve according to their signal-to- noise ratios (SNR) for a particular time slot and the user with the highest SNR is selected. Typically, a homogeneous system, in which every user has the same mean SNR, allocates time slots to all users with equal channel utilization. On the other hand, a heterogeneous system, in which every user can have different mean SNRs, frequently chooses users with the highest mean SNR to maximize the aggregate capacity. In this paper, we present a user scheduling method on the broadcast channels for heterogeneous systems exploiting multiuser diversity according to predefined user channel access probabilities. This work is the improved version given in “A Feedback Quantization Scheme Leveraging Fairness and Throughput for Heterogeneous Multi-User Diversity Systems”, IEEE Trans. Vehicular Technology, Volume 59, Issue 5, p. 2610-2614, 2010. Thus, the users access to the channel according to the predefined quality of service while the aggregate capacity is maximized.
