  • Teaching real-time DSP using digital signal processors at the University of Leicester

    There is an urgent need to develop efficient methods to promote the understanding of digital signal processor (DSP) chips in the education of electrical engineering students. Such devices can be up to 70 times faster than standard microprocessors for some tasks, making the real-time implementation of some rather complex signal processing algorithms possible using cheap, but very flexible, hardware. The Engineering Department of the University of Leicester found that a lecture combined with practical work in a single laboratory session, in all lasting one day, is a very effective way to introduce the subject. The activities cover the particular architecture of the DSP processor chip and that of the development card used, programming in Assembly, understanding the software for controlling the interface of the DSP processor to the host processor (PC compatible) and the treatment of interrupts. Our teaching is based on the TMS320C25 DSP chip. We give some background, then detail the equipment used and finally present part of the material handed out to the students for the laboratory session.

  • DSP teleoperation for digital signal processing teaching and training via Internet

    We present a project dedicated to DSP (digital signal processor/processing) teaching. This project is under development at INSA-Rennes and is entitled TELEDITS (TELEoperation de DSP par Internet pour le Traitement du Signal) an acronym for "DSP remote control through Internet for signal processing". Our goal is to propose different aspects in digital signal processing teaching and training. TELEDITS can be split up into two parts: the first part is an HTML- based tutorial with Java simulations to illustrate different signal processing topics like FFT, filtering; the second one consists of a development tool for remote control of a DSP-based board through a network connection. The current version of TELEDITS is based on the TMS320C50 DSPs. We are still working to improve it by integrating more useful tools like numerical filter synthesis. In the future version, we aim to integrate a multiconference-like process so that many clients can share and work simultaneously on the same DSP project.

  • Design and Implementation of a DSP Based Digital Controller for a DC-DC Converter

    The design and digital signal processor (DSP) based implementation of a digital controller are presented for the dc-dc converter. Starting with a dc- dc buck converter and a given set of performance specifications, a digital PID controller is implemented in TMS320F2812 DSP. All the necessary DSP hardware or software techniques and algorithms required to implement the controller are discussed in detail. The steady state and dynamic response performance of the controller is presented in order to demonstrate the effectiveness of the design.

  • High Performance Analog & Digital Mixed-Signal and DSP Control Systems Design for Reduced EMI

    Modern high performance control applications demanded from mixed-signal and digital signal processors (DSPs) are ever increasing. As digital circuits and DSP operate at a higher rate, a considerable amount of noise and radiation degrades the system's performance and creates EMI problems that make it difficult to pass tests required to obtain certification by the EMC regulations. In this paper, we introduce some effective methods for reduced EMI of the measurement and control systems, which are power supply design, clock and phase-locked loop (PLL) isolation, decoupling techniques, digital and analog partitioning, printed circuit board (PCB) layout, and so on for meeting many challenges of mixed-signal and DSP systems design. Design guidelines for improved EMC and signal integrity are derived from the results obtained, thus, the evaluation board of the measurement and control systems is especially suitable for performing function in high definition array induction log (HDAIL)

  • Design and implementation of a seeker signal processor based on FPGA and DSP

    The seeker signal processor is a key device of a seeker. Based on the common characteristics extracted from seekers with different architectures, a general-purpose hardware scheme based on Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) and Digital Signal Processor (DSP) is proposed. By taking full advantage of the FPGA and the DSP, the signal processor is equipped with the ability of high speed and real-time signal processing. Because of the space limitation inside the seeker, the principle of miniaturization and low power consumption should be followed. At the same time, online updating and dynamic loading of the program can be easily achieved through the serial peripheral interface, which makes the debugging process easier.

  • Optimal scheduling and mapping of digital signal processing algorithms on TMS320c6x DSP

    This paper presents a systematic methodology of scheduling and mapping of fully deterministic digital signal processing algorithms onto a digital signal processor having multiple functional units. The process of scheduling and mapping is carried out using the integer programming technique. The scheduling problem is modeled on the basis of digital signal processing algorithm. DSP architecture is used to model the mapping problem. Solving the integer program gives an optimal schedule and optimal mapping.
