  • Secure, privacy-preserving, distributed motor vehicle event data recorder

    Similar to flight data recorder (”blackbox”), motor vehicle event data recorder (MVEDR) is a device installed on a vehicle to record information related to the vehicle's conditions. This information is useful for accident investigation but there are cases of loss or complete destruction of MVEDRs after serious accidents. On the other hand, Vehicular Ad-hoc NETwork (VANET) is an emerging infrastructure with roadside units (RSUs) installed along the roads to communicate with the vehicles. This triggers our idea of virtual distributed MVEDRs using VANET. Conceptually, event data is transmitted to RSUs as vehicles pass by. Like other VANET-based applications, security and privacy are two major concerns of drivers. In addition, volume/frequency of data to be transmitted to and stored at RSUs may be an issue. In this paper, we propose a secure and privacy-preserving scheme for vehicle-RSU communications so that event data and driver identities can only be revealed by authorized personnel. We show that our idea is feasible, through simulations, in terms of transmission overhead due to extra security controls with different data uploading intervals.

But, with the growing demand of vehicles and adaption of new emission standard by the government, more safety systems will be the need of near future and this work will help in providing a cost effective Black box which can help improving the safety systems. This work focuses on developing the Black box system through Model-Based Design (MBD) considering the 1616a IEEE Standard for Motor Vehicle Event Data Recorders (MVEDRs) Amendment 1: MVEDR Connector Lockout Apparatus (MVEDRCLA) for low end light motor vehicles (LMVs). The dSPACE MicroAutoBox II is the prototyping embedded hardware which act as the Black Box. The computational and data storage capabilities of dSPACE MicroAutoBox II make it possible to process and store the data for long time using its flight data recorder feature. However few datasets can also be stored to the external secure digital (SD) card. This work is mainly focused on the algorithm development and implementation of such system. A sensor fault detection technique is also incorporated in the proposed system.

  • Highway vehicle accident reconstruction using Cooperative Collision Warning based Motor Vehicle Event Data Recorder

    There is often uncertainty or negligence in measurements and calculations by collecting relevant evidence and site information at the scene for the conventional vehicle accident analysis and reconstruction. Cooperative collision warning (CCW) mechanism exchanging static and dynamic vehicle information with neighboring vehicles through inter-vehicle wireless communications provides an active safety mechanism for vehicles on highways. Received information is not only used for calculating the relative safety distance between neighboring vehicles, but also preserved in a motor vehicle event data recorder (MVEDR) for future accident reconstruction. A CCW-based MVEDR can easily rebuild the trajectory and interaction between the host and neighboring vehicles within communication range. This device is a supplementary tool for conventional accident reconstruction, and it saves time, labor and cost required for investigations, and eliminates uncertainty regarding accident analysis.

A CCW-based MVEDR can easily rebuild the trajectory and interaction between the host and neighboring vehicles after an accident. This device saves time, labor and cost required for accident analysis and reconstruction.

  • Applying Embedded Hybrid ANFIS/Quantum-Tuned BPNN Prediction to Collision Warning System for Motor Vehicle Safety

    This study is to explore how to realize high-performance collision warning system (CWS), providing the precaution against traffic crash in transit. An embedded hybrid adaptive network-based fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) plus quantum-tuned back-propagation neural network (QT-BPNN) built in the platform with DaVinci+XScale-NAV270 was employed to realize collision warning system and we also installed motor vehicle event data recorder (MVEDR). Finally, experiments and verification of the proposed approach were done successfully to achieve better accuracy and more effectiveness on warning level issuing and event data record to motor vehicle.
