However, the academic discipline of Engineering Management has existed for a little over forty years. Engineering Management was established as a M.S. program in 1965 at the University of Missouri- Rolla (now Missouri S & T). Today there are over 70 universities offering this important degree in the United States. In Europe, Engineering Management education is generally linked with Industrial Engineering. The largest Engineering Management organization in Europe is ESTIEM. In China, Engineering Management was introduced as an academic discipline in the mid-1980's according to Dr. Zhongtuo Wang of Dalian University of Technology. Today there are over 150 universities offering Engineering Management programs in China.

    The author tries to quantify the measurement of good engineering management through interviews with operations management specialists. The engineering management score is obtained for a sample of large Japanese firms, and correlated against their financial performance.   • Engineering management education — Status and goals of University degree programs

    By mid-career the majority of the engineers have progressed to management positions. Management programs designed for engineers are offered under a variety of names and formats in many engineering schools. Three classes of such programs are defined and discussed. As a discipline in engineering education, engineering management suffers from lack of common identity. An important vehicle for communication and mutual problem solution is the ASEE Constituent Committee on Engineering Management which has now been officially active for 16 months. Some goals proposed for this committee and progress toward them during this initial period are described.

  • Research on the IE solution for design phase of engineering management in manufacturing sectors in China

    In this paper, the phenomena of poor functions of many new factory buildings are presented. The fundamental causes are negligence of importance of design in engineering management and lack of scientific design. This paper puts forward an industrial engineering (IE) solution for design phase of engineering management in manufacturing sectors in China. Because factory design involves many aspects, a multi-layer model for factory design is proposed. IE theories, principles and methods are extended into many layers of the model. A phase-wise model for implementing the IE solution is suggested. Based on our research, we come to a conclusion that engineering management needs scientific design, and in order to enhance design phase work of engineering management, it is possible and suitable to apply the IE solution to design phase of engineering management in manufacturing sectors in China.

  • Engineering management or management of technology? a bibliometric study of IEEE TEM

    We tend to use the terms engineering management (EM) and management of technology (MOT) interchangeably. This paper tries to examine what these mean through a bibliometric study of IEEE transactions on engineering management. As well as introducing bibliometric ideas, network analysis tools identify and explore central concepts covered by EMMOT and their inter-relationships. Specific results to be presented will cover different levels of analysis and so show different dimensions which can be extracted form citation data: *Co- word terms from article keywords used to identify themes *Journal title co- citation network: link MOT to other disciplines *Individual publications co- citation networks used to show concentrations of underlying themes and how they relate. Citation patterns of publication titles show that MOT appears dominant in IEEE TEM and the discipline has a bridging role in integrating ideas from several distinct areas including innovation, NPD, strategy, organisation science and management science. The analysis further suggests that MOT essentially relates to the firm rather than policy.
