  • The trends for smartphone products and software consumption in Taiwan: An application research combining industry analysis and consumer focus group interviews

By 2009, Taiwan's mobile phone penetration was hovering near 110%, with fixed lines holding a steady 55%. By May 2012, one-third of Taiwanese over age 13 owned smartphones. This paper investigates the development of Smartphone products and application software from the industry analysis based on both literature review and interviews with five managers. Those managers, holding positions in prominent, related companies, include a carrier, a device producer, a mobile application software producer and a mobile marketing company. The mobile industry interviewees includes: (1) Chunghwa Telecom, which is the largest carrier in Taiwan; (2) ACER, which is a well-known computer producer now developing smartphones and tablet products as well; (3) Ecowork and MobiMedia, which are two larger application software and mobile marketing companies in Taiwan. Also, the researcher launched several consumer focus group interviews to gather information regarding trending in smartphone products and software consumption. This study shows the viewpoints from both mobile industry representatives and consumers.

The amount of information displayed on an online shop could distract consumers' focus that might result in customers leaving the website or canceling transaction. Recommendation that provides customers with relevant products is required to make a decision easy for a wide variety of products. Relevancy of products for a customer can be achieved through user patterns discovery. This study aims to develop a user model to provide personalization on e-commerce based on customers group. This study involved 100 participants consisted of 25 girls, 25 adult females, 25 boys, and 25 adult males. Data collection was performed using an e-commerce website i.e. http://www.erstore.biz to record users' activity. Data analysis was done using the RapidMiner Studio 5 to provide a decision tree as user model grouped by age and gender. This study found that male and female users among different age groups have different patterns in recognizing process. Female users have a shorter process in the identification of age group than male users.

Today data mining is widely used by companies with a strong consumer focus like retail, financial, communication and marketing organizations. Here technically data mining is the process of extraction of required information from huge databases. It allows users to analyze data from many different dimensions or angles, categorize it and summarize the relationships identified. The ultimate goal of this paper is to propose a methodology for the improvement in DB-SCAN algorithm to improve clustering accuracy. The proposed improvement is based on back propagation algorithm to calculate Euclidean distance in the dynamic manner. Also this paper shows the obtained results of implemented proposed and existing methods and it compares the results in terms of its execution time and accuracy.

  • Hacking the House Chapter 2: The Boston VoIP doorbell

In the January 2016 issue of IEEE Consumer Electronics Magazine, I confessed to my Chicago apartment misdeeds that led me to a life of noncriminal behavior of hacking the house. I also mentioned how my constant attempts to integrate more and more technology into our everyday living have challenged my wife's sanity. (I rationalize my behavior by telling her she is performing important beta testing as part of my permanent consumer focus group.) She is okay with the Wi-Fi Internet coverage inside the house but needs to bring me into the room to change the channel on the TV because I have implemented a gateway box with a cable QAM tuner to MPEG2 DLNA video over Internet Protocol (IP) via Wi- Fi to thin client wireless set-top boxes running a rendering app on a Google TV platform. She is just about getting comfortable with the home private automatic branch exchange (PABX) connecting Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) phones connected via a HomePNA (HPNA) network. I don't think she minds having to predial trunk access codes before each outgoing phone call because it means we have many more possible outside lines and are able to access the home phones via the public Internet while we are away from our home base. Even the X10 network has become a welcome resident because the stand-alone controller takes care of the lights, automatically adjusting for sunrise and sunset based on the month of the year.

  • Risks, benefits and strategies for responding to the green consumer: a global perspective

The environmental awareness born in the 1990s presents numerous opportunities for designers, producers, and advertisers. The interests expressed by the powerful coalition of green consumers should be considered in the earliest possible stages of product development in order to fully and honestly tap into this consumer desire. The new consumer focus clearly should be evaluated by companies wishing to design products that meet the high standards of the new consumer. More importantly, companies should use this opportunity to reflect on what motivates the green consumer. In other words, companies ought to use the green consumer revolution to motivate the design and development of truly environmentally conscious products, rather than simply modifying a product slightly to take advantage of the green consumer. Additionally, as discussed, coupled with the potentially significant marketplace advantages of environmentally sound products and green labeling, is the confusing maze of prohibitions and restrictions on green labeling. It is imperative that both design engineers and advertisers educate themselves on the benefits and the risks associated with green claims. As a guiding principle, all parties involved with the production and sale of environmentally beneficial products must strive to honestly inform the consumer, while at the same time avoiding confusion and misrepresentation in an attempt to capitalize on this new breed of consumer.

  • Knowledge management for consumer focused product design

As firms adopt a consumer focus with a mass customization strategy, it is essential to conduct early product design trade-off analysis among competing objectives of increased product variety, shorter product lifecycles, and smaller lot sizes. This paper proposes a knowledge management approach integrating capabilities for intelligent information support and group decision-making, utilizing a common enterprise network model and knowledge interface through shared ontologies.

  • Creation of a driver preference objective metric to evaluate ground vehicle steering systems

The evaluation of vehicle steering systems has typically been performed by engineers and consumer focus groups using in-vehicle and automotive simulator studies. In the latter case, driver preferences have been extensively gathered using written questionnaires. However, this delays the testing procedure and may introduce outside influences that may skew the results. In this paper, an objective steering preference metric has been created to gather steering preferences without directly communicating with the driver. Streaming vehicle data has been recorded, processed, and correlated with subjective response data to create a global steering preference metric. A combination of the vehicle's yaw rate, longitudinal acceleration, and lateral acceleration demonstrated an excellent correlation with survey responses regardless of the steering setting. Furthermore, changes in the steering ratio resulted in an even stronger correlation between the objective data (longitudinal acceleration, front tire angle, and throttle position) and test subject questionnaire responses. Overall, the proposed index offers a unique approach to evaluate steering system designs.
