  • Output estimates on Taiwan's cable TV industry

    Taiwan's public sectors once hoped that the cable TV industry could generate the forward and backward linkage effects, inspiring developments for the broadcasting and TV industry, and even overall, the cultural and creative industries. Although the number of cable TV companies had increased rapidly, consumers generally believed that cable TV providers not only failed to handle changes in the consumers' preferences, but also left negative impressions on the consumers, with the feeling, that the providers are merely collecting channel fees and are unable to provide qualified contents for fulfilling customers' demands. This led to a continuous decrease in the penetration of cable TV. We find that the public sectors must change the existing method of output calculation in order to avoid overestimation of outputs, and misguiding their policy designs and allocation of funds. Cost calculation could be modified from an expenditure side, and also input-out tables could be compiled. These make it easy for the industries with the best forward and backward linkage effects to be identified for focuses of assistance by the public sectors on developments of the broadcasting and TV industry.

The cable TV industry has invested considerable capital and resources to improve the reliability and the quality of their distribution plants. In this process, the industry has developed a multipurpose private network with tremendous capacity to provide many additional broadband communication services. Because most of the infrastructure is already in place, the cable TV industry is in a position to speed PCS service to the public with a minimum of additional investment.   • Personal communications services and cable TV

    Unlike cellular mobile radio systems, microcell based personal communications networks (PCN) have high initial, fixed costs, that do not scale with number of subscribers. Given these high fixed costs, and expected lower monthly subscriber fees, it is difficult to make a profitable business case for a conventional approach to implementation of a PCN system. However, cable TV systems already exist in many of the same areas that are attractive candidates for new PCN systems. These cable TV systems are already rich with spare optical fiber capacity and have the additional ability to transport fully modulated RF signals.     This paper addresses the topic of the reverse channel in cable TV networks- maximizing the capabilities of the upstream spectrum using advanced modulation and demodulation techniques. We provide an overview of the different modulation schemes that were proposed for the next generation cable modem upstream physical layer (also known as 'HI PHY') in the IEEE 802.14 standardization committee and describe the solution that was finally chosen by the leading silicon vendors in the cable modem industry.
