  • Statistical life data analysis for electricity distribution cable assets — An Asset Management approach

Nowadays, power utilities are adopting Asset Management as their framework in order to cope with the challenges introduced by the privatization and market competition in this sector. Stedin, a Dutch Distribution System Operator recognized the vital role that an Asset Management system has for its organization. Therefore, Stedin, has adopted the publicly available specification, BSLPAS55, as a standard to perform the Asset Management responsibilities and tasks of their electricity and gas networks. Equipment life cycle and technical performance activities form an integral part of the implementation of an Asset Management system. In this context, Stedin felt the strong need to have access to systematic techniques and guidelines on how to deal with information of equipment lifetimes. In this paper a systematic method, based on Statistical Life Data Analysis, which deals with limited or incomplete life time data of large populations of assets with the aim of obtaining an indicator of the future failure expectancy is discussed. The methods and analytical tools developed in this contribution share a basic framework for decision-making and specify the evolution of the failures of asset population over time.

  • Corporate asset management and survey in Croatian companies

Today, in times of crises, Asset Management is gaining in importance. Industries and organizations are growingly concerned with understanding what combination of output, cost and reliability gives the best financial return to the business. Asset Management evolved from Maintenance Management to provide a holistic approach to managing the life of a physical asset. It is not focused only on maintenance and operations: today, Asset Management provides business framework and tools in order to improve and optimise the contribution of a physical asset to overall performance. Numerous international associations and institutes like The Institute of Asset Management - IAM London, EFNMS (Europe), GFMAM AM Council of Australia, ABRAMAN (Brazil), SMRP (USA), FIM (South America), GSMP (Arabian Gulf Region) and Croatian Maintenance Society, developed general principles to cover all stages of the asset management process including knowledge, governance, skills, practice, benchmarking, shareholders' value, etc. The common goal of all associations is transfer of knowledge through various programmes of education and certification for a new professional discipline - asset manager or asset governor. Asset Management is a concept intended to provide support to decision-makers to ensure efficiency and performance improvements; it draws from economics as well as engineering. Asset Management provides for the economic assessment of trade-offs between alternative improvements and investment strategies from the network or system-level perspective - that is, between modes and/or asset classes within modes. (American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, 1996) [1]. The survey on implementation of Asset Management concepts in the Croatian companies was carried out on the sample of nine companies. It indicated that the Asset M

  • How asset management can boost the competitiveness of renewable energy

In the past decade, renewable energy developed into a fast-growing industry that has become a realistic alternative to conventional methods of power generation. With a focus on the (offshore) wind energy, this paper shows how best practices from other fields of industry can be applied to increase the sector's speed of maturation. A simplified model is used to visualise the relation between cost and performance, and their effect on the price per kWh for renewable energy. Results from case studies and recent literature show that, among others, the overall effects of asset management not only lead to a reduction in maintenance costs of up to 30%, but also increase availability with 5% or more. This can potentially reduce the cost per kWh significantly, thereby giving wind energy a final push towards becoming fully competitive with conventional energy production.

  • Developing a whole company culture of asset management through organisational structure, an asset management framework and a risk based approach for asset intervention

Wessex Water Services Ltd, one of the 10 regional water and sewerage companies in England and Wales, has consistently delivered industry leading levels of service to customers and the environment. It relies not only on dedicated staff but notably on the billions of pounds worth of assets under its ownership to continue to provide such service. In 2006 Wessex Water embarked on a journey to develop and demonstrate excellence in Asset Management throughout every part of the business involved in managing assets. This paper describes the approach, the journey and the challenges faced by the company after it made a conscious decision to increase its asset management maturity. To help it on its journey the company used BSI PAS55 as a roadmap for increasing its asset management maturity and in 2008, when it first received certification, was the first water company to do so.

The article presents a systemic and systematic engineering and asset management information system of Ministry of Defence. Asset management strategic planning and decision making are introduced.

  • Asset management as change management: A case study from a railway infrastructure manager

Railway infrastructure manager of Infrabel is working to improve and develop their asset management. Infrabel owns, manages and operates Belgium's railway network and infrastructure. Infrabel is needing to deliver more capacity at higher levels of quality with limited resources. It has set up an integrated asset management and smarter maintenance programme to lead the change.

  • “Implementing an Asset Management framework into a Municipal environment in the Middle East”

The article presents asset management policy formulation and strategy in the Middle East. Issues and opportunities in creating an asset management in an environment of enormous development growth is also presented.
