  • A context-based document system for wearable computers

    With the continuous availability of wearable computers, users have the opportunity to create and acquire large numbers of files. The ability to stare and retrieve documents effectively with these machines is a key issue. Hierarchical storage is not adequate because the user must focus on where a document is stored instead of on what it contains. This paper explores how context can be used to help the capture and access of documents in a wearable computer. It examines several systems that use context with documents. It then presents a new storage system that uses context to aid in the capture and access of documents in a wearable computer.

  • Dynamic connection of wearable computers to companion devices using near-field radio

    Hewlett-Packard Laboratories, Bristol and the University of Bristol Department of Computer Science are engaged in an initiative to explore the design, technology and use of wearable computers. We describe a way of connecting a wearable computer to companion devices such as displays or cameras using near- field radio technology. The short-range nature of near-field radio allows relatively high data rates (300 kbps-1 Mbit), low power consumption and the interpretation of gestures as configuration requests.

  • Forward error correction with Reed-Solomon codes for wearable computers

    High-speed multimedia data transmission is vulnerable to burst errors primarily due to its frame structure. Forward error correction (FEC) codes mitigate the effects of multipath fading as some form of time diversity by adding redundancies into the transmitted data. This paper evaluates the performance of Reed-Solomon codes on transmitting ATM data for lightweight wearable computers using single carrier modulation. The aim is to maximize link and minimize the impact of atmospheric conditions on bit error rate (BER) performance. The performance is compared with signals transmitted without any forward error correction scheme. This scheme is particularly suitable for small wearable computers with high portability due to simplicity of circuitry making it suitable for consumers on the move.

    The U.S. Army's Land Warrior program focuses upon providing the dismounted soldier with up-to-date technology for wireless communication, navigation, and data sharing. Recent program activity has centered upon applying commercially- available solutions wherever possible. This review presents the latest system design, and discusses the results of recent evaluation exercises.
