MZM-PM configuration can also be used for generating single sideband (SSB) and carrier suppressed double sideband (CS-DSB) schemes. However, SSB scheme suffers from low signal to noise ratio (SNR) due to the strong dc component present in the detected signal. CS-DSB scheme cannot deliver the vector signal without modifying the phase and frequency at the receiver. Proposed VSB scheme can compensate chromatic dispersion (CD) of the RoF link as well as can deliver the vector signal without modification of the carrier frequency and phase at the receiver. We provide the theoretical analysis of the MZM-PM configuration. We illustrate the behaviour of harmonic distortion due to the CD in dispersive RoF link. Finally, we provide the comparison of symbol error rate of the proposed VSB scheme using 4QAM modulation format with DSB and SSB schemes. Simulation results show that VSB scheme can provide better performance than DSB and SSB scheme in dispersive RoF link.

  • Optimum Pulse Shapes for Pulse-Amplitude Modulation Data Transmission Using Vestigial Sideband Modulation

    When designing pulse-amplitude modulation (PAM) systems for use over bandpass channels having restricted bandwidth, one may be led to use single-sideband (SSB) or vestigial sideband (VSB) transmission in order to maximize transmission rate. Carefully shaped pulses must be used to minimize degradation due to intersymbol interference (isi). In this paper VSB pulses are derived that have no inherent isi, and in addition have maximum immunity in a mean-squared-error (MSE) sense to timing and carrier phase errors. The results here generalize on those of Franks who treated the SSB case. The optimum VSB pulses are shown to be identical to those of Franks at the band edges, and to have vestigial roll-off characteristics of a similar discontinuous nature. It is also shown that one may allocate available bandwidth to the vestigial roll-off band band and Nyquist roll-off band in any way desired. The final performance for the optimum pulse depends only on the total bandwidth used. These results are shown to apply as well to a system employing a matched filter. The case of random timing and phase errors is also considered, and optimum pulses are again found. Several mathematical properties of the optimal pulses are given physical justification and geometric insight through error ellipses, and optimal signal shapes are plotted for various cases of special interest.

  • All-optical signal processing techniques with fiber based devices

    Optical networks are fairly static and operate within well-defined specifications. The addition of new nodes or the upgrade of existing links demands an enormous expenditure. A cost-effective implementation of future optical networks should accommodate old static networks, as well as new highly-efficient networks. It also should be intelligent, self-managed, monitored and dynamically-reconfigurable and should be able to accept new nodes in a plug-and-play manner. Such devices allow surpassing some of the limitations inherent to electric devices by keeping the signal in the optical domain, avoiding electrical-optical-electrical (OEO) conversions. This filter is a good candidate for format conversion between double sideband modulation (DSB) and vestigial sideband modulation (VSB). DSB signals can also be used in the device, by format conversion to VSB using the FBG optical filter described above. Continuous tunable compensation between 0 to 350 ps/nm was achieved for a 40 Gbit/s NRZ signal. This interesting ability to apply different processing functions to different polarizations was successfully used in the development of advanced OCDMA systems, remote switching systems, wavelength converters, or optimized radio over fiber systems.

  • Equalizer with data recycling algorithm for fast convergence in 8-VSB DTV systems

    The 8-vestigial sideband modulation (VSB) for digital television systems transmits a training sequence called field sync every 313 segments with a period of 24.2 ms. However, the field sync sequence is not long enough to guarantee the operation of an equalizer. So it takes many field sync sequences for the convergence of the equalizer especially in severely distorted channel conditions. In this paper, an algorithm called data recycling is proposed for fast convergence of the equalizer in 8-VSB systems. The data recycling algorithm utilizes only one field sync sequence for several times thereby reducing the convergence time for the equalizer. The control algorithm for the operation of the equalizer is also proposed with comparison of conventional equalizer.

  • Synthesis of bandwidth efficient OQAM and VSB transmultiplexers

    A set of conditions which allow bandwidth efficient transmultiplexers to be synthesized is developed. The synthesis procedure is based on a generalized impulse response for the combining (modulating) and separation (demodulating) filters. In particular, the combining and separation filters are bandpass versions of one or two lowpass prototypes and are configured to cancel crosstalk by exploiting relationships between the center frequencies, delays, and phases in their impulse response. Based on the derived conditions, five different transmultiplexers are synthesized. Three of them implement orthogonal quadrature amplitude modulation (OQAM) with repeated center frequencies. The other two accomplish vestigial sideband modulation (VSB) with distinct frequencies. The transmultiplexers can be converted into new complementary subband systems. Intersymbol interference is eliminated in both the transmultiplexers and the subband systems by appropriately designing the prototypes.<<ETX>>

  • Efficient VLSI architechtures of adaptive equalizers for QAM/VSB transmission

    This paper proposes hardware architectures of adaptive equalizers applicable to both the quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) and vestigial sideband modulation (VSB) systems. This paper presents digitization methods for QAM and VSB systems requiring a low hardware cost with the performance comparable to that of the algorithm employing floating-point operations. To reduce the hardware cost of the high definition television (HDTV) equalizers, we also propose a pipelined architecture that processes some parallel parts sequentially.
