  • Web-based smart DMB platform; Hybrid platform for mobile broadcasting and telecommunication

    In this paper, we propose a hybrid platform for mobile broadcasting and telecommunication. This platform, the `Web-based smart DMB platform', targets smart mobile devices with terrestrial Digital Multimedia Broadcasting (T-DMB) functionality. Due to the success of smart phones, many video services via the Internet have been developed and telecommunication companies are trying to enter the broadcasting market. The development of this platform originated with the idea that, in this smart device era, mobile TV services must evolve to be more attractive and smarter than ever before. Broadcasting systems have to adopt more advanced features like those of smart devices, including openness, convergence, participation, etc. As the first step to the ideal platform, the Korean Broadcasting System (KBS) has developed core technologies and systems which combine T-DMB video over the air and multimedia services via the Internet on Web pages. To demonstrate the potential of the proposed platform, we present a prototype system and some experimental services.

  • Development of SVG based data broadcasting services in Terrestrial DMB

    T-DMB (terrestrial digital multimedia broadcasting) involves data broadcasting services such as BWS (broadcasting Web site), slideshow, EPG (electronic program guide) as well as audio and video services. However, since these data broadcasting services are defined in the conventional DAB standard, it is difficult to satisfy a variety of users' needs in the present, even compared with various services provided through the internet environment. In this paper, we present the new data broadcasting service in T-DMB using SVG (scalable vector graphic), which is a language for describing vector graphic. After defining the proposed service in the T-DMB standard, we also verify it from the test bed system constructed through implementation of the SVG contents server and the SVG supporting T-DMB receiver. This shows the technical possibility of the SVG based data broadcasting service in the T-DMB system.

  • Personal and Mobile Satellite DMB Services in Korea

    A new mobile multimedia broadcasting service using a geostationary satellite was launched on May 2005 in Korea. The Satellite Digital Multimedia Broadcasting (S-DMB) system provides high quality audio, video and data broadcasting services to handheld and mobile receivers. S-DMB is a personal digital media which can provide bidirectional and interactive services via the convergent platform of broadcasting and communication. At present, TU Media, the only S-DMB service provider in Korea, provides 15 TV channels, 19 audio channels, and 3 data channels. The number of subscribers is about 890,000 by Nov. 2006. Thousands of low power gap fillers (repeaters) have been installed in the shadowed or blocked reception areas in the metropolitan Seoul. This paper presents the system requirements, standards and specifications, architecture, and service status of S-DMB in Korea. Comparisons with other satellite broadcasting systems and the services are also presented. Link budget analysis on the direct path down-link (satellite to receivers) and relay path feeder link (gap fillers to receivers) are carried out in order to ensure the satisfactory QoS

  • Development of T-DMB system for mobile multimedia broadcasting service

    We show the framework of the Korean terrestrial digital multimedia broadcasting (T-DMB) standard and propose the architecture of a new T-DMB system for mobile multimedia broadcasting services. We also designed and implemented a new device called the ensemble remultiplexer to verify the proposed T-DMB transmission system.

  • Bidirectional Interactive Conten ts Player for Terrestrial Digital Multimedia Broadcasting (T-DMB)

    This paper presents a bidirectional interactive contents player for terrestrial digital multimedia broadcasting (T-DMB). The presented player is capable of sending user requests to a proper return channel server using information included in a scene presentation. The player provides functionality to combine requested data received via communication networks with the initially broadcasted contents to present additional information to users. The result of a request transmitted back through the broadcasting network can also be presented properly using the presented player.

  • An efficient space-frequency transmitter diversity scheme for DMB-T system

    To improve the transmission performance of terrestrial digital multimedia/television broadcasting (DMB-T) system, the performance of an efficient space-frequency transmitter diversity scheme is introduced in this article. This scheme maintains the original transmitter branch and the network structure is simple to upgrade. DMB-T system is an important candidate for Chinese digital television terrestrial broadcasting (DTTB) standard. The system was simulated over both slow and fast fading DTTB channels. Simulation results show that the introduced transmitter diversity scheme can efficiently improve the system performance in fading environments

  • Hybrid DMB services based on mobile broadcast/communication converged networks

    As several current and emerging broadcasting services are evolved to integrate with internet contents, Terrestrial Digital Multimedia Broadcast (T-DMB), or DMB also is required to combine with mobile contents provided through wireless communication networks. The paper proposes new concept of the converged service based on the DMB and wireless communication networks. After developing various kinds of servers and a hybrid DMB App, we verify the proposed hybrid DMB service in the real mobile environment. From a result, we present the feasibility of the proposed service as a commercialized service.

  • Implementation of chipset for a digital multimedia broadcasting receiver

    A new national standard for digital multimedia broadcasting (DMB), which is fully backward compatible with the Eureka-147 system, has been developed in Korea to provide high quality digital audio, video and data broadcasting services in fixed, mobile and portable receivers. We have developed the world's first chipset for portable DMB receivers. We present a two-chip solution for the portable DMB receiver. One is a multimedia processor decoding the newest video standard, H.264, and the other is a channel processor. We describe the low-power high performance design and specification of this chipset.
