  • Optimal control of complex irrigation systems via decomposition-coordination and the use of augmented Lagrangian

    In this paper, we consider the optimal control problem for complex irrigation systems, using a receding horizon. The idea of decomposition is introduced for the goal of both reducing the computational complexity, to comply with the system topology and the monitoring architecture. A decomposition-coordination algorithm based on the use of both an augmented Lagrangian and the duplication of variables is developed which is suitable for the optimal control of complex irrigation systems, composed of water retention systems, water supply/distribution systems using canals and pipe networks. In some conventional decomposition-coordination approaches, such as the price decomposition-coordination algorithm, the coupling constraints between subsystems or the associated Lagrange multipliers are used as coordination variables. In our case, some physical variables, such as water flow rates, are duplicated in each subsystem, where they appear. Some compatibility constraints are then introduced and their associated Lagrange multipliers are used as coordination variables. In this paper, we present the application of this approach to to the Canal de la Bourne irrigation network, which irrigates the agricultural plain of Valence (south-east of France).

  • Key ways of energy saving in pump units for melioration and irrigation systems

    The theoretical principles of energy saving ways in the melioration and irrigation systems of rural areas have been considered. The issues of electric energy saving are becoming increasingly important due to the constant increase in fares and introduction of the law on the energy efficiency and energy conservation. Use of a regulated electric drive is becoming increasingly widespread for energy savings on pump units. It is necessary to take into account the specific characteristics of electric machines used for melioration. The corresponding analytical dependences have been obtained for the appropriate control of water moving and energy supplying technological processes. The analysis of the optimization objective function and the efficiency coefficients of the individual elements, as well as a general indicator of the system effectiveness, has allowed finding of the optimal system parameters and determination of the energy saving operation modes. On the basis of three year actual data gathered in the melioration pumping station static pressures, a low value (50-60%) of the annual system efficiency has been found.

  • An Effective Simulation Model for Performance Prediction of SPV Powered DC Irrigation Systems-A Case Study for Validation

    This paper presents mathematical model of SPV powered DC irrigation system. The simulation model is developed in MATLAB. Discrete models of solar photovoltaic panel, DC motor-pump assembly and pipe network are developed. The systematic interconnection of the discrete units resulted the SPV irrigation system. The proposed model is validated by conducting experiments on 1 HP SPV DC water pump installed in Energy Park, Basaveshwar Engineering College (A), Bagalkot. The detailed performance analysis of the physical system is carried. System response for varying hydraulic head and solar radiation are tabulated. The proposed mathematical model is tested for the performance. Simulations are carried for different solar radiations and with changing hydraulic head on the pump. Local radiation data collected from automatic weather station is employed in the model. Simulation results are compared with practical values. The results revealed that, simulation results closely match with experimental values. Further, the developed model is employed for prediction of the performance of the SPV DC pumps for selected sites. The results are obtained for Bagalkot, Goa and Dharwad locations. Thus, it is concluded that, developed model will be of greater benefit to predict the effectiveness of SPV powered systems and for economic selection of irrigation systems.

In order to effectively reduce the impact of inadequate water resources on China's economy, from modern agricultural cultivation and management perspective, according to the basic principles of Internet, with wireless sensor technology, this article proposes precision agriculture irrigation systems based on the internet of things (IOT) technology, and focuses on the hardware architecture, network architecture and software process control of the precision irrigation system. Preliminary tests showed this system. is rational and practical.

  • Some studies on performance analysis of two different laboratory scale solar photovoltaic water pumping in irrigation systems

    By considering the limitation of the conventional energy resources, renewable energy plays an important role today. The agriculture procedure is totally dependent on the good irrigation process and the irrigation process is on the energy sources. Solar photovoltaic pumping can provide the necessary alternative way. With the advancement of the technology, so many pumps are available in the market which can be used for solar pumping operation. In this study, two different types of pumps are taken for experimental purposes. One pump is diaphragm type reciprocating pump and another one is centrifugal pump. The experiment is carried out for four months. Based on the result, different characteristics are represented for three different pump discharge pressure. The main objective of this study is to make the comparison of different parameters like efficiency, minimum intensity required for pumping operation etc for two pumps. Based on this result, finally to see which pump is suitable for photovoltaic operation and at which condition. To best of our Knowledge this is the first time such type of comparative work on laboratory scale solar photo voltaic (SPV) water pumping systems for irrigation purpose was reported.

  • Optimal Configuration Design and Operation of Pressurized Irrigation Systems Using Stochastic Optimization

    This paper presents a new stochastic optimization model, MOCEP, developed for simultaneously optimal configuration design and operation of a pumped irrigation system with balancing tanks. MOCEP is a coupling between the Multi- Objective Covariance Matrix Adaptation Evolution Strategy optimization algorithm and the hydraulic Epanet model that aims at balancing the total cost and network resilience estimation during extended period simulations. The costs mentioned here consist of general capital, construction, and operation costs. The network resilience is a measure of both the nodal surplus power and the uniformity in diameter of pipes connected to that node. The optimization of both network layout and pipe size was taken into account with a pre-defined maximum layout under a prespecified level of layout reliability. An application to a real world case study in the Al Batinah coastal plain (Sultanate of Oman) is presented to illustrate ability of the new approach.

  • Monitoring of irrigation systems using genetic algorithms

    In this paper we will present an application, which uses genetic algorithms, which predicts the necessary quantity of water used to irrigate a crop. We will interpret the results from the humidity sensors, in order to obtain a better production value at the end of each day. The application is designed for a casual sized crop. We will present results obtained for days from different seasons, as well as results obtained for a different number of humidity sensors. We will not use a classic genetic algorithm. This particular form will not use the cross-over function.

  • An Agent-Based Modeling approach for decision-making in Gravity Irrigation Systems

    Efficient water resources management is an issue of major importance in the field of sustainable development. Several models for resolving this problem can be found in literature, especially in the agricultural sector which represents the main consumer through irrigations. Therefore irrigation management is an important and innovating area which was the subject of several research and studies to cope with the various activities, comportments and conflicts between the different users. Modeling, and more particularly, the Agent-Based Modeling (ABM), allows bettering representing the multiplicity of the different actors (especially the stakeholders and farmers), the diversity of their roles, the communication and the social interactions between them. Another advantage of the ABM, that it has a great potential in representing dynamic processes in a complex system such as Systems of Gravity Irrigation Networks. In our work, we are particularly focused on open canal irrigation networks, since this type of irrigation is the most common in Morocco and exists around the world. These systems are characterized to be energy efficient but have several limitations and raise a large water loss. Proper management of this irrigation systems and better allocation of water resources among the various actors will be therefore needed. In this paper, we propose the use of multi-agent framework modeling of Management Systems of Gravity Irrigation Networks (MSGIN), operating with a water rotation. Our objectives are mainly located on two levels. The first one, concerns the MSGIN modeling by a multi-agent technology and the agent modeling through AML language. The second one focuses on the negotiation modeling among the various stakeholders and users of water resources. For the implementation of our approach, we opted for an open-source environment: StarUML and JADE multiagent platform.
