The actual operation results of the system show that the design of the database has obtained good results.

Automated test and diagnostics equipment significantly reduce the number of operations, which are being performed during testing and reveal most of the failures and flaws. Methods for improving the systems under development are proposed in this paper, these methods are based on structural optimization and allow improving performance, providing precision setting of the test signals levels and increasing rate of generating test sequences. The paper also analyses a method of control based on the phase synchronization systems.

  • Novel methods of protection and control equipment accommodation

    The CEGB 275/400 kV Supergrid System comprises 209 substations of varying age. In them there are 1668 feeder main protection units and 486 items of signalling equipment. Approximately 65% of these have an unsatisfactory performance, some other kind of limitation or are obsolete. Feeder protection alone provides the CEGB with approximately 25 circuits per year needing to be refurbished, which due to the time taken to carry out the work plus the increased rate of obsolescence of modern equipment, provides a perpetual workload unless times for design, draughting, installation, testing and commissioning of equipment can be considerably reduced. The author describes new techniques for accommodation of protection and control equipment at new and existing substations. The objective is to give reductions in lifetime costs and overall engineering time without loss and if possible, improvements in availability and reliability.<<ETX>>

  • The small manufacturers approach (to rail traction control equipment)

    For the small company designing microprocessor controlled equipment for use on rail traction vehicles, all of the constraints on design and manufacture which affect a larger company-meeting performance, reliability and environmental requirements-still apply. There are also additional restrictions imposed by the limited resources of a small company to withstand the potential financial effects of failure of equipment to perform to the customer's satisfaction immediately it is installed, possibly resulting in protracted post-delivery investigations and costly modification programmes. The author argues much effort must therefore be expended throughout all phases of any project to minimise the risk of such problems occurring and to ensure that all equipment supplied meets the specified requirements of performance and reliability on first installation. Some comments on an approach to minimising the risks inherent in any project are also given.<<ETX>>

  • EMI hardening of electronic control equipment to meet military standard (a case study)

    This paper describes the techniques employed for hardening a digital controller to meet stringent emission standards, both conducted and radiated. The digital controller is used for critical system interlocking and sequencing operations and data exchange with on-board computers.
