  • Seven-Spot Ladybird Optimization Algorithm Based on Bionics Principle

    For solving the problems of modern intelligence algorithms such as slow convergence and low precision, a new algorithm based on bionics principle has been proposed which is inspired by the foraging behavior of seven-spot ladybirds in the nature. By analyzing the bionic principle of Seven-spot ladybird Optimization(SLO), we simulate the region search pattern of predation of seven-spot ladybirds, combining fast extensive search with careful and slow intensive search of the ladybirds, meanwhile we use three kinds of evaluation information to evaluate the solutions one by one, then the exploration and local approximation in the SLO are balanced. Next, in this paper we analyze the SLO theoretically by mathematics, presenting its specific process and proving the feasibility of SLO. The results based on a set of widely used benchmark functions show that Seven-spot ladybird can converge fast and yield distributed solutions with higher precision.

  • Effect of vibrotactile feedback for balance rehabilitation with the Ekso Bionics® exoskeleton

    Degraded proprioceptive system due to injury or disease affects standing balance and locomotor ability. This work presents a method combining a robotic exoskeleton and sensory augmentation device (“V-Belt”) capable of compensating for the impaired sensory systems for people with neuromuscular disorders. The “V-Belt” provides real-time vibrotactile feedback to help restore balance information for exoskeleton users. Both able-bodied and non-able-bodied subjects with spinal cord injuries have been recruited to evaluate the effectiveness of additional haptic feedback in balance retraining. Results show that subjects found this vibrotactile cue easily interpretable, useful in adjusting their posture and beneficial for self-rehabilitation.

  • On Design Methodology and Practice of Bionics

    It has been 50 years since Bionics were first being studied and developed. However, the findings and scholars in Bionics were rather deficient comparing with its developing history, and that made Bionics unable to become a leading subject among all the other disciplines, let alone the achievements of Bionic applications to designing. Under the principle of interdisciplinary research, this study has reviewed the concepts and knowledge system of Bionic design, and further by the given examples of the Biology of crabs, this study has also analyzed a hands-on practice in applying the Biological knowledge to designing. The logic of Bionic design, which is also the ultimate expectation of this study -- is to reload and transform the elements of Biology and technology/material after the comprehension of Biological knowledge. To sum up, this study aims to inference the education approaches of Bionic design, and to construct and analyze the methodology of Bionic design by the achievements of former approaches. Aimed at the third year university students in Taiwan, the hands-on practice revealed the following effects: 1. the designers usually have a good sense on connecting the shape and functions of organism to the product design, and result in a visual completeness. 2. Knowledge of different organisms indeed enriches education, thought and sense, and opens up a new route of designing. 3. Interdisciplinary study is necessary for breaking the closed subjects, and for accepting another new knowledge to widen the view. I believe this worth a better development by more designers and researchers in the future.

Many do not make full use of the technology available to them because it is unreliable, uncomfortable, and nonintuitive, so researchers are pushing the envelope to create practical solutions that function like real limbs.

  • Application of Bionics in Antenna Radar Cross Section Reduction

    Bionics principle is applied to antenna radar cross section (RCS) reduction in this letter for the first time. To authenticate the method, a novel bionic ultrawideband (UWB) antenna is proposed by use of a model of insect tentacle. Its UWB-related radiation characteristics are simulated and experimentally verified. Monostatic RCS of an insect tentacle antenna (ITA) terminated with three different loads are studied and compared with that of a common printed circular-disc monopole antenna (PCDMA). The results show that compared to the reference antenna, the novel bionic antenna has lower RCS and favorable radiation performances. Hence, applying bionics principle to antenna RCS reduction is feasible, which will serve as a good candidate for the future design of antennas with a requirement of RCS control.
