To prevent errors in the conversion process, Anti-Aliasing Filters are employed prior to the ADC. Digital filtering is performed after the ADC using a digital signal processor, which is implemented on the QF4A512.

  • The Data Acquisition System of the MAGIC-II Telescope

    The MAGIC telescope is the world's largest gamma ray telescope, designed to look at the light emitted by air shower by Cherenkov effect. It is operating since 2004 at the Roque de Los Muchachos observatory, La Palma, Canary islands. MAGIC-II is the upgrade of the project, consisting of a twin telescope frame with innovative features like new photon detectors to lower the threshold energy further and an ultrafast signal sampling to reduce the effect of the diffuse night sky background. The new acquisition system is based upon a low power analog sampler (Domino Ring Sampler) with frequency ranging from 1.5 to 4.5 GHz and data are digitized with a 12 bit resolution ADC. The analog sampler, originally designed for the MEG experiment, has been successfully tested on site and showed a very good linearity and single photon discrimination capability. Data management are performed by 9U VME digital boards called PULSAR (PULser And Recorder) which handle the data compression and reformatting as well. Every board has 80 analog channels plus auxiliary digital signals for trigger and monitor purposes. For a kHz trigger rate and a 2 GHz frequency sampling, the data throughput can be as high as 100 MB/s thus being a challenge for modern data transmission and storage solutions. The data are transferred to PCI memory via Gbit optical links using the CERN S-Link protocol and to the mass storage system. The Data Acquisition system design and performance are described in detail.

We first describe the publish/subscribe and peer-to-peer messaging paradigms, discuss their use in real-time and online systems, and describe the power and flexibility of the publish/subscribe paradigm. Next we describe the philosophy of the cMsg implementation and present some details and benchmarks. Finally, since the core of cMsg is written in pure Java, we discuss the suitability of Java for use in real-time and online systems

  • Data Acquisition System Upgradation at Engine Test Cell

    A flexible, easily configurable data acquisition system (DAS) is designed and built for the testing of engine. It is an Ethernet based data acquisition system. Primary requirements that necessitate the upgradation was the ability to easily configure, save, recall, and modify test configurations, The ability to configure the gain, channel name, and engineering units for each analog channel and to design and develop a DAS that was user friendly and could be operated easily by test cell operators. This is achieved by selecting and installing the appropriate data acquisition software and hardware at Test Cells. The hardware selection comprises the computer type, data acquisition hardware (Opto and Gantner), instrumentation (thermocouple, transducers etc.) and software selection focus on operating system and different application software. Raw data readings (Voltage, Current etc.) are made through data acquisition equipment and those are changed over to engineering units (weights, temperatures, speeds, PSI and so on) by software application to calculate various performance parameters of engine. This data is also checked for the range of acceptable limits (flag, abort, emergency stop) to trigger necessary alarm messages or buzzer where applicable. Test data are stored and archived for future analysis. The described system is intended to set up a fast operating and configurable DAS at low cost consisting of various sensors, acquisition hardware and software applications for acquisition and processing. This system gives improved methods of collecting, recording, and reducing test data for increased test cell utilization at engine test cell. This system provides better data, faster, and at a lower cost.

  • Implementation of Intelligent Data Acquisition Systems for Fusion Experiments Using EPICS and FlexRIO Technology

    Currently, the hardware devices and software tools used in data acquisition (DAQ) systems for diagnostics in fusion experiments are not standardized. Consequently, the development of new hardware and software needed by scientists and diagnostic experts to implement new solutions, requires a substantial amount of time delaying the execution of new experiments. The solution presented in this paper consists of a design model that provides the potential for developing intelligent and reconfigurable data acquisition systems for easy integration in fusion diagnostics. The main hardware components used for this design model are the flexible reconfigurable input/output (FlexRIO) devices from National Instruments, which are embedded systems based on field-programmable gate array (FPGA), and PXI/PXIe technology. The main software element is an EPICS device support, based on asynDriver software technology, that provides easy integration in the EPICS environment. Integrating these two elements enables the development of complex DAQ systems using reconfigurable hardware to implement any type of customized data acquisition with preprocessing. The methodology proposed here was evaluated by obtaining results and performance figures for three different applications integrated in an ITER fast controller.

  • The common data acquisition system based on Arm9

    Embedded technology and people's lives have been closely related, but traditional data acquisition system only responds to particular signals, which is quite limited. A newly-designed idea is proposed in this paper with ARM9 processor as the core components to design a common data acquisition system. We need to use different data acquisition board according to different signals, to form a user-defined data acquisition system conveniently, flexibly and fast. Hardware structure is made up of Web Server, ARM9 system board and the multi-block STM8L data acquisition board. With Linux as the operating system, ARM9 system board, based on the Qt platform, develops the application program and completes the corresponding tests. It mainly includes: (1) In accordance with the actual application requirements, this paper proposes that the system should focus on the characteristics of high-precision, high speed, low-power and strong anti-jamming to design, and gives the overall system design and structural design of intelligent nodes. (2) The concrete hardware circuit design of common data acquisition system has been accomplished, which mainly includes designing STM8L data acquisition board and ARM9 system board. (3) The concrete software design of common data acquisition system has been accomplished, which mainly includes building Linux operating system, building Qt development environment, ADC, digital filtering, designing real-time data communications, real-time graphics display applications and so on. (4) Because it is battery-powered in STM8L data acquisition board, the system needs to work with low power. Based on the analysis of energy consumption in STM8L data acquisition board, the system has adaptive mechanisms of sleep to reduce system power consumption, ensuring the system can orderly run for a long time.

  • Design of LabVIEW based general data acquisition system

    In view of the phenomenon of repeated development in data acquisition system, a universal data acquisition system was designed by using LabVIEW software based on NI-6358 data acquisition card. Users could customize the conversion of each channel and store the configuration information through files. A high- speed data acquisition and processing framework was proposed by combining state machine and production/consumer system, and it realized synchronous collection of 32 channels and display, convert, stored in real time. The test and operation results showed that the system had high sampling rate, stable and reliable operation, and could meet the requirement of generality.
