  • Intelligent transformer substations in modern medium voltage networks as part of “smart grid”

Higher utilization of the power systems, variable load flows due to decentralized power generation from renewable energy sources and a growing need for information of the regulating authorities place higher demands on fault detection and acquisition of system operating data. Furthermore, remote indication and remote control can considerably reduce supply interruption times as well as system breakdown costs, and provide rapid adjustment to varying load conditions. Therefore, the requirements for the intelligence of transformer substations will increase in the future. But where are the limits of useful and cost-efficient utilization? They are somewhere between a merely passive substation and the complete automation. With the gas-insulated medium- voltage switchgear type 8DJH, Siemens offers the basis for application in an intelligent transformer substation. It is optionally equipped with motorised operating mechanism; short-circuit indicators and voltage detecting systems, as well as a variety of other sensors. Plug-connected to a Remote Terminal Unit (RTU) in a separated wall-mounting cabinet, the switchgear fulfills all preconditions for integration in an intelligent network infrastructure. This article provides an overview on different intelligence levels, possible kinds of communication to the telecontrol system as well as necessary components and requirements of future intelligent transformer substations.

The influence of vacuum monitoring on the availability of the disconnector application in “open ring” and “closed ring” distribution networks as well as in the fast transfer switch application is discussed. It is shown that the continuous vacuum monitor improves the availability of the disconnector function to 99.99998 %.

  • High current medium voltage solid state circuit breaker using paralleled 15kV SiC ETO

The SiC ETO concept, developed based on the SiC gate turn-off (GTO) thyristors, has the advantages of simple voltage controlled gate drive, very high blocking voltage, low forward voltage drop and large turn-off current capability, demonstrating a high suitableness for medium voltage solid state circuit breaker applications. In this paper, a 15 kV/200 A solid state circuit breaker (SSCB), which is suitable for medium voltage direct current (MVDC) power systems protection, is designed and developed based on the parallel and high temperature operation of the 15 kV SiC emitter turn-off (ETO) thyristors. To realize the 200A current rating, three SiC ETOs are connected in parallel. The static and dynamic current sharing of the SSCB is tested at 4.5kV/200A, showing it is an ideal candidate for the medium voltage SSCB applications.

  • An Evaluation Method of Voltage Characteristics for Medium-Voltage Distribution Network Considering Probability Distribution and Fluctuation

Currently, voltage qualification rate is the only voltage quality assessment index of medium voltage distribution network, lacking objectivity and accuracy. Thus, this paper proposes an evaluation method of voltage characteristics for medium voltage distribution network considering probability distribution and fluctuation. First, voltage curve deviation index and voltage curve fluctuation index are designed, based on probability statistic method. Then, voltage characteristics evaluation model of medium voltage distribution network is designed based on TOPSIS, which adopts order relation-entropy weight method to determine weights of indexes. Finally, a case study shows that the proposed method can realize the comprehensive evaluation of voltage qualification rate, voltage probability distribution characteristics and time domain fluctuation characteristics, which provides reference for the power supply enterprises to screen and reform medium-voltage feeder lines.

  • Multi-level Inverters Application Features for Medium Voltage Electric Drives

The article analyzes the energy characteristics of a medium voltage electric drive with multilevel converters. The research relevance is confirmed by the diverse requirements for energy converters such as insuring high efficiency and power factor, and maximum reliability and stability. The study objective: the frequency-controlled electric drives dynamic characteristics analysis with using a multi-level voltage converter based on H-bridges structures. Research methods: the electric machines theory, power electronics, operational calculation, harmonic analysis, numerical simulation. The transient processes of the medium voltage induction motor during start-up are considered. To simulate the characteristics of the electric drive, the model of an asynchronous machine in a fixed coordinate system was used.
