  • Variable Speed Drive of Single Phase Induction Motor Using Frequency Control Method

    Single-phase induction motors are widely used in home appliances and industrial control. The multispeed operation and multipurpose operation are provided by controlling the speed of these motors. This research paper is variable speed drive of induction motor using frequency control method. It is to develop the solid state control system to be reliable and economically feasible to use with fractional horse power motors. The proposed variable speed drive includes power conversion section (AC to DC and DC to AC), used the switching element of IRF 840 N-channel MOSFET. The four IRF 840 MOSFETS are used as H-bridge inverter to provide the alternating current to the motor. In this drive, C124 transistors and MJE 13002 transistors are used as driver circuit to drive the H-bridge inverter. There are two power supplies in this drive. The 12 V power supply is used for frequency control circuit and driver circuit. The 300 V power supply is used for H-bridge inverter. In this drive, pulse width modulation SG3525A IC is used to control the frequency. The frequency range of the constructed variable drive circuit is 16 Hz to 56 Hz at constant voltage for changing the speed of induction motor. In this research paper, drive schemes of single-phase induction motor, principle operations of components used in constructed variable speed drive, and design calculation to construct this drive are included. Moreover, the experimental tests of this drive when driving a fractional horse power single-phase induction motor are described.

  • Variable-speed-drive-based soft sensor for the twin-rotary screw-compressor output pressure

    Compressed-air systems account for a notable share of the industrial electricity consumption. At the same time, a significant potential to improve the energy efficiency of compressed-air generation has been recognized. Variable-speed drives provide an efficient and flexible way to regulate the output of a screw compressor and to match the typically intermittent demand of compressed air. In addition to capacity control, drive estimates for the electric motor operation can be used in soft-sensing methods. This paper proposes a novel soft sensor, which can monitor the output pressure of a twin- rotary screw compressor based on the variable-speed drive's estimates for the compressor's rotational speed and shaft torque. First, the working principle of the soft sensor is explained in detail and suggestions for commissioning, i.e. tuning it, are given. Finally, the feasibility of the soft sensor is verified with laboratory measurements.

  • Step-response simulation of energy regulation based electrohydraulic variable-speed drive

    The electrohydraulic variable-speed drive(VSD) can achieve a high energy efficiency as volume drive. But its main disadvantages, which are slow response and poor low-speed performance, limit its development. The energy regulation based electrohydraulic VSD is a good solution to solve these problems by adding an energy regulation device and a main-circuit throttling valve into the conventional electrohydraulic VSD system. The step-response simulations, which include several load types, are carried out. The simulation results have showed that the energy regulation drive can not only achieve a good energy-saving performance, but also gain a fast step-response.

  • Effect of coercive force and characteristics of a pole changing permanent magnet motor for variable-speed drive

    Energy savings in electrical appliances and electric vehicles can be realized by reducing the power consumption of motors operating for variable-speed drive. In order to reduce the energy consumption of such electrical devices, flux-weakening currents are used to reduce the voltage at high rotational speeds, which leads to significant copper and core losses. To counter this problem, we have developed a new technique that changes the number of poles in a permanent magnet (PM) motor based on the rotational speed. Therefore, we have proposed a PM motor that can vary its electrical machine constants to obtain high efficiency and an extensive rotational speed range. Herein, we describe the structure, pole changing magnetization mechanism, and basic characteristics of a novel pole changing PM motor, and present various characteristics of the motor over a wide rotational speed range. Furthermore, we also discuss the effect on the motor of the coercive force of the variable magnetized permanent magnet. The results of our study show that the proposed motor reduces core loss by about 50%, doubles the rotational speed range of the motor, and demonstrates high efficiency over a wide rotational speed range.

  • Modeling of conducted common mode perturbations in variable-speed drive systems

    In this paper, common mode (CM) conducted perturbations are predicted and compared with experiments in a variable-speed drive system, thanks to a mixed approach based on experimental measurements and on the modeling of the complete CM circuit. Its different parts are considered and represented by a chain of quadripolar matrices: the inverter, the cables, and the induction motor. At last, it is shown that the parasitic currents in the system can be calculated in the different stages of the matrix chain. Experiments have successfully confirmed this approach.

  • Modelling and reduction of common mode currents in a variable-speed drive system by two-port network approach

    In this paper, a modelling approach based on specific experimental measurements and on two-port networks is addressed. This mixed frequency- domain model allows us to simply calculate or estimate common mode (CM) currents in each part of any existing complex variable-speed drive systems. The validity of the model is satisfactorily confirmed by comparison between measurement and numerical simulation. Using the validated two-port network model, investigation on parameters influence can be carried out to know which parameters in the considered system are the most dominant, and in which way CM currents can be efficiently reduced or eliminated in order to ensure the reliability of the whole system in terms of Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC), especially for the embedded electronics in aeronautics.
