A galvanically replaced composite nanocrystal based metamaterials for plasmonic applications – Metamaterials 2018

2018 12th International Congress on Artificial Materials for Novel Wave Phenomena (Metamaterials), 2018

We demonstrate the simple fabrication way of the tunable, thermally and chemically stable plasmonic metamaterials using nanoimprinting and galvanic replacement process. By galvanic replacement process, the Ag-Pt (or Ag-Au, Ag- Pd) composite metamaterials were fabricated and the optical plasmonic resonances were controlled for various applications.

Low plasma frequency zigzag metamaterials

2016 10th International Congress on Advanced Electromagnetic Materials in Microwaves and Optics (METAMATERIALS), 2016

We have demonstrated that a periodic array of zigzag-shaped metal strips emulates an artificial plasma much better than the array of straight metal strips. The main advantage of this new geometry is that the electric size of the unit cell is significantly reduced. We have found an excellent agreement between the plasma model and the full wave simulation results for ...

Ultrafast Polarisation Control with Metamaterials

2018 12th International Congress on Artificial Materials for Novel Wave Phenomena (Metamaterials), 2018

Plasmonic and dielectric metamaterials allow designing not only linear but also nonlinear optical response, such Kerr-nonlinearity and harmonic generation. Here, we discuss applications of anisotropic metamaterials and metasurfaces in active control of polarisation state of transmitted and reflected light on ultrafast timescales.

2D semi-analytical model for optimizing the radiation emission of quantum emitters embedded in a bounded nano-patterned hyperbolic metamaterial

2018 12th International Congress on Artificial Materials for Novel Wave Phenomena (Metamaterials), 2018

We propose a two dimensional (2D) semi-analytical method to calculate the radiated power and Purcell factor of a quantum emitter (QE) embedded in a medium bounded between a nano-patterned structure and a homogeneous dielectric. We apply our 2D model to optimize a nano-patterned hyperbolic metamaterial (HMM) to increase the QE's quantum efficiency while preserving a high Purcell factor. The low ...

Merging metamaterials with quantum photonics

2015 9th International Congress on Advanced Electromagnetic Materials in Microwaves and Optics (METAMATERIALS), 2015

We have studied the effect of a high photonic density of states provided by a metamaterial environment on the dynamics of nanodiamond based nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers. We have experimentally demonstrated the broadband enhancement of single-photon emission from nanodiamond NV centers coupled to a planar multilayer metamaterial with hyperbolic dispersion. In addition, we have studied the influence of Purcell effect on ...

The low computational cost of this method makes it quite attractive for quantum efficiency optimization, providing initial physical and/or geometrical parameters to be fine-tuned with three-dimension (3D) full- wave techniques such as FDTD.

  • Merging metamaterials with quantum photonics

We have studied the effect of a high photonic density of states provided by a metamaterial environment on the dynamics of nanodiamond based nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers. We have experimentally demonstrated the broadband enhancement of single-photon emission from nanodiamond NV centers coupled to a planar multilayer metamaterial with hyperbolic dispersion. In addition, we have studied the influence of Purcell effect on the fluorescent contrast between the NV center spin states.

  • Magnetic polarizability of planar extremely subwavelength Mu-negative metamaterials

An planar extremely subwavelength Mu-negative metamaterials is presented at low frequencies, composed of periodically arranged lumped components and subwavelength distributed structures with the combination of double layer rectangular spiral unit structure. The magnetic polarizability is induced by the resonance of the dual-layer metamaterials excited by an alternating electromagnetic field. The equivalent value of the magnetic polarizability in the metamaterials is obtained with an integral treatment of the magnetic polarizability distribution.

  • Double Fano resonances in a composite metamaterial possessing tripod plasmonic resonances

Double Fano resonances are observed in a planar composite metamaterial possessing tripod plasmonic resonances, where a common subradiant driven oscillator is coupled with two superradiant oscillators. As a classical analogue of four-level tripod atomic system, the extinction spectrum of the composite metamaterial exhibits a coherent effect based on double Fano resonances. It is shown that a transfer of the absorbed power between two orthogonal superradiant oscillators is mediated by a common subradiant oscillator.

  • 1D chirality in all-photodesigned THz metamaterials

We suggest that all-photodesigned metamaterials, sub-wavelength custom patterns of photoexcited carriers on a semiconductor, can display an exotic extrinsic electromagnetic chirality in terahertz (THz) frequency range. We consider a photo-induced periodic pattern exhibiting 1D geometrical chirality (its mirror image can not be superposed onto itself by translations without rotations) and we prove that, in the long wavelength limit, te considered metamaterial configurations show an electromagnetic extrinsic chirality whose strength can be easily tune by recasting the optical illumination. Due to their extreme reconfigurability, we believe that the 1D chiral all- photodesigned metamaterials could offer opportunities for designing new reconfigurable devices for THz wave polarization manipulation.

  • Volume manufacturing and industrial applications of metamaterials: Rolling lithography, holography, laser filtering and photovoltaics

In this paper we examine different applications of metamaterials in industrial environments. We provide overview of activities in laser filtering and photovoltaics. We also stress the importance of manufacturing metamaterials and metasurfaces in high volume and affordably. Specifically, we focus on the technique of rolling lithography, which can produce nanopatterned surfaces over meter-long lengths.
