  • Smartphone-Based Industrial Informatics Projects and Laboratories

    The use of IT technologies plays an important role in the training of future engineers. In this paper, smartphones and multimedia technologies are proposed as an innovative way to tackle the formation of students, at different levels, in the Industrial Informatics (II) subject of the Industrial Electronics Engineering (IEE) degree. II instructs future Engineers in the design of IT systems to control industrial processes. In the first level, smartphones are used to display a web-based multimedia tool that is implemented to register the lecture explanations regarding the design of II systems, so as it facilitates student to guide him/her self in the learning process. In the second level, the smartphone is proposed as the control system of a medium size industrial process (e.g., water tank). Since II uses a problem-based learning methodology (miniproject) to instruct the design of II systems, for each lecture, laboratory practices are tackled, and the solutions obtained are embedded in the smartphone to control the corresponding part of the miniproject. An application of the Smartphone multimedia tool is presented to show how students interact with the developed system. The successful evaluation of the proposed tools, by more than 900 IEE students during three years, is shown.

IMS provides a framework for industry and academia to cooperate throughout the full innovation cycle and to identify partners worldwide. It offers opportunities for broad-based technology trials and benchmarking, involving a worldwide user community, ensuring the general applicability of the technology developed. It also provides a better understanding of global markets through improved market intelligence. IMS offers a proven, effective and efficient framework for the protection of IPR that provides in particular for small and medium-sized enterprises a safe environment in global collaboration. The 10-year agreement is currently reconsidered for renewal. The project portfolio involved 300 Meuro worldwide total R&D investment so far

  • A novel educational proposal: Devising an electric power system

    The study of electric power systems within the field of Electrical Engineering is usually approached by computer simulation because any actual test is quite complex to be implemented, especially with renewable energies. Having the aim to improve student learning about this topic, a new subject called “Devising an Electric Power System” was organized following a CDIO (Conceive-Design- Implement-Operate) approach. The subject is programmed for one academic year and based entirely on laboratory work. The students are divided into three teams. Every team would have to work on a power system that includes a solar PV generator and a pumping controlled drive, both connected to a three-phase grid. The third and last part of the subject is focused on “electric utility” business strategy. In the final day of the course a competition between the three teams takes place.

  • RGB-D map for robot navigation

    In this paper we present an algorithm for 3D map generation with an RGB-D sensor. The purpose of the generated map is to improve the navigation and localization abilities of a mobile robot. Single RGB-D frames were captured and a complex 3D representation was created using simple geometric transformations.

  • Electric arc model in PSCAD — EMTDC as embedded component and the dependency of the desired active power

    In this paper an electric arc model is presented, model which depended of the desired active power of the electric arc. The model was implemented in PSCAD - EMTDC as a custom embedded component defined by the user. The components are designed, implemented and can be saved into a PSCAD library in order to be used in simulation of electric arc schemes. The performances of the model were also studied using PSCAD - EMTDC.

  • Benchmarking of existing OPC UA implementations for Industrie 4.0-compliant digitalization solutions

    A standardized Communication / Information Protocol is necessary for implementing the 4 upper digitalization layers of Industrie 4.0-compliant solutions. OPC UA is one of the leading and preferred technology. Currently, there are many different OPC UA implementations available on the market. This paper gives an overview of existing solutions and shows the results of an initial benchmarking based on a set of evaluation criteria defined by the authors. Moreover, the manuscript identifies both free-of-charge and commercial solutions that are more adequate for implementing industrial applications.

  • Advanced control strategies for irrigation systems

    Water management and irrigation scheduling have become the main subjects of different studies in the last decades, due to their high influence on crop performance indicators. This study presents the most important parameters that have to be monitored in an irrigation management system and the most important ones are synthesized: air moisture and temperature, soil air and moisture, evapotranspiration. Based on the monitoring of these parameters, different control strategies and methods can be applied for optimization and efficiency of irrigation systems. The synthesis in this paper starts with classical control systems and, also, advanced methods such as fuzzy concept, decision support systems and model predictive control. Considering the currently necessity of integration into the Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) concept, the paper finally proposes an irrigation control system for vineyards. The SCADA architecture is suitable for the Romanian context, it allows flexibility and ease of use and it reduced both energy consumption and irrigation operation costs.
