    This paper illustrates the environmental factors critical to the successful implementation of ISO 14001. The analytic hierarchy process (AHP) methodology was applied to find out the relative weights and priorities of these environmental factors. With the combination of the methodology of the AHP and the environmental factors listed in ISO 14001, a case study has been carried out on the port of Shanghai. The results of the study indicate the order of importance of the critical environmental factors of Shanghai Port.

    Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) are considering as a promising alternative renewable energy source, especially for remote monitoring applications. The power generation performance of Aquatic microbial fuel cells (AMFCs) has been verified, and the applications of AMFCs are approved. However, the application range is limited for AMFCs because of the water environment they need. So MFCs based on other carrier are demanded. A Terrestrial microbial fuel cell (TMFC) is proposed in this study. The structure and inoculation procedure are presented and the power generation performance of the proposed TMFC is tested. The Open Circuit Voltage (OCV) of the proposed TMFC is about 0.75V and the output power density is about 3mW/m<sup>2</sup>, which are normal values in previous researches of AMFCs. The relationship between environment temperature, soil water content and the output power density of the proposed TMFC are tested by experiments, which can explain the effects of the TMFC power generation performance by environmental factors. Experiment results suggest that TMFCs are one of alternative power sources for small electronic devices.

We suggest morphing technique that is change technique about object like swimming fish in the water that repeats certain frames, want to design system that simulates after-grown aspects that are changed by changes of various environmental factors that affect growth process of fish.

  • Developing disease risk prediction model based on environmental factors

    Analyzing the effects of various environmental factors on human diseases is one of the important issues in recent bioinformatics studies. In this paper we investigate several environmental factors regarding Type-2 diabetes and select some of them for develop an analytical model of disease risk prediction. For the selection of significant factors, we first preprocessed all the environmental factors into categorical values and then calculated the max/min odds ratios of all the categorized environmental factors. After that, we chose the top-n ranked factors as input features for the prediction model. The disease risk prediction model was developed with SVM classifiers, where training data were built based on Ansan/Ansung Cohort 2 Data obtained from the Korean National Institute of Health (KNIH). Here the data imbalanced problem was occurred in training data, which can be often observed in reality. Thus, to handle this problem, we regenerated the training data by using the SMOTE approach and used them for disease risk prediction modeling. For model evaluation, the proposed method was employed to predict the risk of Type-2 diabetes disease. The experiment results showed that our SVM classifiers based on selective environmental factors could produce very comparable results to the prediction model with genetic factors in forecasting the risk of specific disease.

  • Studies on the effect of environmental factors on growth of tubificidae

    The effect of environmental factors such as life styles pH and DO and temperature on the growth of tubificidae were discussed base on L. hoffmeisteri. The experimental results indicated that attached growth system is superior than suspension growth system for Tubificidae. The average growth rate was 0.466 g.g-1and -0.242 g.g-1respectively after three weeks culture. It is found that high DO concentration is benefit to Tubificidae when DO changes from 0 to 4.0mg/L. When DO is 0 ~ 0.5mg/L, the death rate is 30% approximately. Tubificidae can grow well when pH is about 7. It is sensitive to temperature, the growth rate increase from 0.338 g.g-1to 0.426 g.g-1with temperature rising between 15°C~25°C. But when the temperature is above 25°C, the growth rate decrease and its death rate is over 40%.

  • Environmental Factors Analysis of Indoor Radon Pollution of the Residence in Uranium Ore District

    The average level of indoor radon concentration for the residence in the uranium ore district is 282Bq/m3and the maximum value can up to 570Bq/m3which exceed the national top limited value (200Bq/m3). Indoor radon pollution of the residence is very serious. In order to find out the reason of radon pollution, the main environmental factors are investigated. Through the calculations of Gaussian atmospheric diffusion model and simulation verification the it is found that the contribution of airborne pollution source terms including uranium mine ventilation shaft, heap leaching field and waste rock yards to indoor radon concentration is only 38.08Bq/m3, accounting for 16.3% of the total indoor radon concentration. But the average value of indoor radon exhalation rate from the ground surface is 0.06Bq/m2·s. By calculating, radon concentration caused by it is 154Bq/m3, whose contribution to indoor radon concentration is 65.8%. It can be seen that indoor radon of the residence mainly comes from radon precipitation of the soil, followed by the radon in the atmospheric environment. The study can provide a reference to reducing radon pollution of the housing and radiation protection of the residents.

  • Design of ship energy efficiency monitoring and control system considering environmental factors

    International Maritime Organization (IMO) proposed the Ship Energy Efficiency Operational Indicator (EEOI) to evaluate the energy efficiency of ships in service. During the implementation of the EEOI, the effective monitoring and optimization management of ship energy efficiency is very important. In this paper, the ship energy efficiency monitoring and control system considering the environmental factors was designed. The system can calculate the EEOI of ship and have real-time displays to monitor current energy efficiency level of the ship by collecting environmental factors and engine fuel consumption data. In addition, the system can automatically output corresponding control signal to make the propulsion system run at the optimum energy efficiency status by running the energy efficiency optimization control model with the consideration of the environmental factors. The designed system can achieve the ship energy efficiency monitoring and optimum control of propulsion system under different environmental factors, thus making the ship run at the optimum energy efficiency level, thereby enhancing the ship energy efficiency and reducing emissions.

  • Classification method for prediction of multifactorial disease development using interaction between genetic and environmental factors

    Multifactorial disease such as life style related diseases, for example, cancer, diabetes mellitus, myocardial infarction (Ml) and others, is thought to he caused by complex interactions between polygenic basis and various environmental factors. In this study, we used 22 polymorphisms on 16 candidate genes that have been characterized and potentially associated with MI in terms of biological function and 6 environmental factors. To predict development for MI and classify the subjects into personally optimum development patterns, we extracted risk factor candidates (RFCs) composed of state which is a derivative form of polymorphisms and environmental factors using statistical test and selected risk factors from RFCs using Criterion of Detecting Personal Group (CDPG) defined in this study. We could predict development of blinded data simulated as unknown their development more than 80% accuracy and identify their causal factors using CDPG.

  • Distribution characteristics of air ions and their relationship with environmental factors in Xi'an

    An investigation of distribution and variation of air ions is essential to understand the factors that affect air conductivity and aerosol formation. The concentration of negative air ions (NAIs) was measured at 16 sampling sites in Xi'an city from August 2009 to July 2010. At the same time, environmental factors were also monitored such as temperature, relative humidity, wind speed and concentration of inhalable particulate matter (PM<sub>10</sub>). The spatial-temporal distribution characteristics of NAIs were then determined. Moreover, the relationships between the concentration of NAIs and environmental factors were analyzed in detail. Finally, influence mechanism of environmental factors was discussed based on the theory of atmospheric ionization and diffusion. The observation results show that both spatial and temporal distributions of NAIs are uneven. Spatially the concentration of NAIs increases from city center to suburb. The average concentration of NAIs is in the range 200 ~ 300 cm<sup>-3</sup> in urban, while more than 500 cm<sup>-3</sup> in the suburb. Over a year the concentration of NAIs is highest in summer and lowest in winter. The positive correlations have been found between the concentration of NAIs and the temperature and relative humidity, while negative correlation has been found between the concentration of NAIs and PM<sub>10</sub>.
