A system level approach to power/performance optimization is described that improved the metric of (performance/(weight*volume*power)) by over a factor of 300 through the four generations.

    This study presents an application of the Self-Organizing-Map method used for the classification of the extremely low-frequency magnetic field emission in the close neighborhood of the portable computers. The experiment is conducted on two different groups of portable computers: (i) laptop and (ii) tablet computers. After measuring their extremely low-frequency magnetic field emission, the Self-Organizing-Map is used for the classification of these results, which authorized the typical emission levels. Some of them are dangerous, because they are far above the valid safety standards' limit. At the end, a discussion is performed on the importance of using the classification as a possible solution for safely use of the portable computers. In this way, it is used to define and reduce the risk of the magnetic field emission negative effects to the portable computer users.

    We believe the notion of hands free operation is critical to the successful use of wearable computer systems. As such, we investigated possible placements of an input device for a wearable computer on different portions of the user's body, while the user assumed different postures (sitting, standing, kneeling, and prone).

  • Application of handheld computers for mobile access to a cardiology information system

    Patient care in a coronary care unit (CCU) can be greatly improved by direct access to a specially-tailored electronic patient record (EPR) system. Current systems are based on large, non-portable workstations or PCs; the present information systems are global applications, not specifically designed for registration and data retrieval at the bedside. As part of the on-going development of CARIS (CARdiology Information System), we have developed dedicated modules to support the clinical care process in the CCU. The user interface has been specifically designed to make the necessary typing effort as small as possible. Instead of on standard PCs, the applications run on so- called Web tablets (Siemens SIMpad/sup /spl copy//). The SIMpad solution was preferred above keyboardless notebook computers (e.g. the Fujitsu Stylistic/sup /spl copy//) or palm-sized organizers (Palm/sup /spl copy//).

  • An information filtering system for portable computers

    Currently, we have many occasions to use portable computers such as personal data assistants (PDAs) and cellular phones. The wireless communication techniques have evolved rapidly, so that we can gather the necessary information from the Internet using the portable computers anytime and anywhere. However, browsing the information takes much tune because we usually have to obtain the information from the Internet using the portable computers having a low data transmission speed. In this paper, we propose an information caching algorithm for portable computers. Our method preferentially caches the files, the size of which is large, and is different from current web caching techniques.

  • Experimental investigation of 60 GHz transmission characteristics between computers on a conference table for WPAN applications

    In this paper, the first measurements of the received radiated power between antennas located on a conference table to simulate the environment of antennas embedded in laptop computers for 60 GHz WPAN applications is presented. A high gain horn antenna and a medium gain microstrip patch antenna for two linear polarizations are compared. It is shown that for a typical conference table arrangement with five computers, books, pens, and coffee cups, the antennas should be placed a minimum of 5 cm above the table, but that a height of greater than 20 cm may be required to maximize the received power in all cases.

  • The Effect of Signals in Hypertext Reading by Tablet Computers

    With the popularity of digital reading, the performance of hypertext reading by tablet computers is attracting more and more attention and research. In this study, we carried out an experiment on 30 university students to examine the effects of signals (graphical overview and highlight topic sentences) on hypertext reading by tablet computers. The results showed that signals would improve reading comprehension of participants with low reading skill, while it would reduce reading comprehension of participants with high or medium reading skill. Besides, signals had a significant influence on disorientation, however, no significant influence on cognitive load. It might be suggested that providing signals in hypertext would benefit readers with low reading skill.
