    With the proliferation of vehicles and advancement of information technology, the technology of telematics, which provides valuable services to people by collecting and analyzing the information from drivers, vehicles and Telematics environments (e.g. traffic information, road condition, weather information, etc.), has been a hot research area in IT and automotive recently. There are needs for telematics makes more profitable. Telematics based insurance services could be one possible business model. In this paper, we have investigated trends of telematics based insurance services in the industry and discussed required technologies for telematics based insurance services.   • Request Based Telematics Contents Providing System using DMB

    This paper describes a system for providing the telematics contents through DMB, according to the requests which are demanded by users. This paper includes the structure of the system which collects the messages requested by users, and makes the list of requests priority, and broadcasts telematics contents through the data channel on DMB. This system enables users to receive the requested telematics contents which are categorized by regions and services. Therefore, the proposed structures help users to receive the distinctive DMB data services. Moreover, the system can reduce the amount of each service data as the service vendors increase the bandwidth of the content requested frequently within the limited bandwidth by collecting and analyzing the requested contents.

However, contents for vehicular telematics are generated by multiple contents providers and their data formats are not compatible. Thus, it is difficult to integrate or exchange contents, e.g., navigation maps, traffic information, points of interest (POI), etc., for various telematics services. In this paper, we propose a telematics contents gateway (TCG) system, which enables the system to integrate different telematics contents, so that the contents can be interoperable. The proposed TCG supports a search function based on a web- service technology. In addition, it provides a common road network model for interoperability, integrating different road network models into the common model. In the experiments, it is verified that there is no information loss in the integration process and the processing time is satisfied for the requirement of telematics service providers (TSP).

  • Design of a Network Coverage Analyzer for Roadside-to-Vehicle Telematics Networks

    This paper designs a connectivity analysis scheme for the roadside-to-vehicle telematics network based on the real movement history of vehicle objects collected from taxi telematics system currently in operation, aiming at providing a useful guideline and information to build a telematics network.The implemented analyzer can locate the current and previous positions of all vehicles, decide whether it can be connected to an RSU, and calculate the duration of disconnected state, taking into account the transmission range, the number of RSUs, and RSU deployment. The RSU placement scheme can improve the network coverage exploiting the analysis result. The experiment result shows that each time the transmission range increases by 100 m, with an appropriate overlap ratio setting, the network coverage is improved by about 10 % and that the larger the transmission distance, the earlier the coverage meets the local maximum according to the overlap ratio.

  • The MAC protocol of WSN for supporting telematics services in the road environment

    In this paper, we propose a medium access control (MAC) protocol for supporting telematics service in the road environment, which requires the guarantee of a delay bound on end-to-end transmission and high transmission reliability in a multi-hop network. In order to guarantee a delay bound on end-to-end transmission and high transmission reliability in a multi-hop network, the proposed MAC adopts the access mechanism based on time division multiple access (TDMA) and uses the superframe structure which considers an end-to-end transmission. Moreover, the proposed MAC can extend a network coverage by using special device, T-sink. Through experiments in the real testbed where the proposed MAC is implemented, we can show that the proposed MAC is appropriate for the telematics service in the road environment.

  • An Efficient Telematics Service Discovery Scheme over the Centralized Vehicular Peer-to-Peer (C-VP2P) Telematics Service Platform

    With the maturation of wireless networks technologies, Telematics service is becoming a new rising and popular network service and application. In this paper, a centralized vehicular Peer-to-Peer Telematics (C-VP2P) service discovery platform is proposed to provide efficient and feasible service discovery. This paper focuses on the issues of developing a Telematics service platform over the vehicular network environment. When a user needs a service on the road, two issues need to be considered: (1) how to have the candidate list of service providers? (2) how to select suitable service providers from the candidate list? In order to tackle these two issues, we propose a C-VP2P- based system service discovery mechanism using the vehicular P2P messaging protocol. In this paper, the vehicular P2P messaging protocol is designed to communicate among Telematics central server, clients and service providers. In addition, a service discovery mechanism in the C-VP2P system is proposed to achieve high precision discovery for service providers. We also exhibit the performance merits of the proposed C-VP2P Telematics service discovery platform in this paper.
