  • Study on river ecological water integrated computation in West Route of South-to-North Water Diversion Project

    This paper, using the ecological water requirement of Western Route of South- to-North Water Diversion Project as the research object, considering the operability of ecological water demand, sets up concrete objects of ecological preservation in water-exporting areas from the perspective of water-cycle, establishes a integrating computational model of the ecological water requirement, then uses the model to calculate the ecological water demand. The results showed that the ecological base flow of each control section is more 10% than the average annual flow during Oct and Mar; more than 30% in the breeding season time from Apr to Sep, which reach a good standard. The results show that the model is of practical value.

  • Water quality of water source area in Taihu Lake and effect on water treatment process

    Due to the severe pollution taken place in Taihu Lake, the investigation of water source quality in Taihu Lake is urgent for the development of drinking water treatment processes. Water samples taken from two water source areas in Taihu Lake were analyzed. The results showed that ammonia, TN, TP and CODMnwere the dominant contaminants. The concentrations of those contaminants all exceeded “surface water environmental quality standards(GB3838-2002)” and seasonally varietied. Turbidity and density of algae displayed similar variation trends all year around and reached the peak values in July and August. In Xiaowanli water source area, the ratios of the dissolved organic substances(DOC) with molecular weights less than 0.5kD and those from 1kD to 3kD to total DOC were 27.92% and 28.37%, respectively. In Chongshan water source area, the ratios of those DOCs were 26.45% and 24.20% Nine classes of the US EPA Priority Pollutants were detected in the two areas. Based on the studied water source characteristics, the recommended drinking water treatment process is as follows: Cascade biological pre-treatment - (enhanced) conventional treatment process-O3-BAC-disinfection.

  • Study on the water environment capacity for the typical watershed in Taizihe River

    Based on the result of analyzing the water quality, the pollution resource and the pollution feature of Taizihe River, the 1-D water quality model was utilized in the water environmental capacity simulation calculation of Taizihe River. The water environmental capacity of the major pollution COD has been imitatively calculated under different guarantee rate (90%, 50%, 25%), with the foundation of the functional zoning and the hydrological monitoring data from all the water quality and hydrological stations at each section of Taizihe River. The result is showed that the allowable emission amount of COD from 09-C~09-I is 345375.78kg/d, 503221.54kg/d, and 593034.76kg/d respectively in the dry, average and wet year. The study has discovered that the water environmental capacity and the water quality could be advanced by the optimal operation of water quality and quantity in reservoirs and dams of Taizihe river basin.

  • Research on status analysis of surface water environment and pollution control in Jiaozuo city

    Investigation and study show that the surface water pollution of Jiaozuo city is serious, the river water quality is V or above V. The total sewage export loads are 13130.42 tons every year, export loads of the main pollutants CODCr are 32846.15 tons, and the NH3-N are 3591.37 tons every year. In this research, the water quality requirements of each function as the water environment pollution controlling ,according to the characteristics of surface water pollution, selecting one-dimensional model and zero dimension model of surface water carrying capacity is calculated, and have got the controlling quantity and reducing quantity of pollutants in different level years, and provided the scientific basis for the prevention and control of water pollution for sustainable utilization of water resources Jiaozuo city.

  • Research on the water purification for reclaimed water resource supply-type lakes by the method of recirculation filtration

    Based on the result of suitable filter screening, A recirculation filtration process with multi-medias was applied to investigate the reactor performance in treating reclaimed water resource supply-type lake water. The results showed that the pollutant removal capabilities for single species packing filter was in the following order: activated carbon>;composite inorganic medium>;volcanic rock>;quartz sand>;gravel. A pilot scale test has been carried out using the recirculating filtration process with volcanic rock, composite inorganic medium and activated carbon media. And the removal efficiencies of CODCr, TP, Chlorophyll a., UV254, UV410 and Turbidity attained 66%, 70%, 90%, 65%, 72% and 83% respectively, while the circle period was 14 days and the filtration rate was 10m/h~13m/h. Moreover, the composition of dissolved organic matter (DOM) was analyzed by the excitation-emission matrix (EEM). The fluorescent components in the lake water DOM were mainly aromatic protein (Peak A and Peak E), humic-like fluorophores (Peak C) and fulvic-like fluorophores (Peak D), in which the aromatic protein fluorophores A and E occurred at 230/344nm and 280/360nm, respectively. The fluorophores intensity of the characteristic fluorescence peaks varied significantly indicating that the concentration of DOM varied with the wastewater treatment process.

  • Treatment of low temperature and low turbidity water enhanced by reusing ultrafiltration membrane washing water

    The effects of recycling ultrafiltration(UF) membrane washing water and PAC pre-absorption on the coagulation-UF process were investigated in the treatment of low temperature and low turbidity water. The results show that the reuse of membrane washing water could improve the coagulation efficiency and retard the membrane fouling. There was imperceptible influence on the turbidity and THMs precursors of the membrane effluent, but the average DOC and residual aluminum was obviously decreased to 2.21 mg·L-1and 0.081 mg·L-1, respectively. The Trans-membrane pressure (TMP) test indicated that compared to other combination processes, the TMP of UF coupled with recycling of membrane washing water increased steadily from 0.061 MPa to 0.069 MPa in the 48h operation duration. Meanwhile, PAC pre-absorption was able to improve the water quality and mitigate the membrane fouling to a certain degree.

  • Modelling water balance at the irrigated crop level to identify pathways for improving water use efficiency

    In this paper, the Soil-Water-Atmosphere-Plant (SWAP) model was used in conjunction with ROSETTA, a soil hydraulic properties simulation program, to evaluate the water balance for irrigated maize crop in Finley, NSW, Australia. The authors used the soil moisture content data to calibrate the SWAP model. The result shows that the simulated soil water content agrees well with the observed data excluding some very low measured soil water content value. Through analyzing the water balance components it appears there are opportunities to save water through better irrigation scheduling and recycling of drainage water. This can be used to help improve irrigation water productivity at the crop and irrigation system levels.
