    Usability Engineering can be seen as a crosscutting concern within the software development process. Aspect Oriented Programming (AOP) on the other hand is a technology to support separation of concerns in software engineering. Therefore it stands to reason to support usability engineering by applying a technology designed to handle distinct concerns in one single application. Remote usability testing has been proven to deliver good results and AOP is the technology that can be used to streamline the process of testing various software products without mixing concerns by separating the generation of test data from program execution. In this paper we present a sample application, discuss our practical experiences with this approach, and provide recommendations for further development.

    Usability is an important factor for product quality. For German small and medium enterprises (SME) in the software branch, cheaper producing vendors from foreign countries can be considered as serious competition. Improving the usability of software products is a good way to secure competitiveness. However, integrating usability-engineering into development is a challenge for SME. In this note, we present the empirical results of a research project study with focus on software engineering processes in German software SME and possible constraints and chances for integrating usability-engineering.

  • Usability engineering from the supplier's point of view

    Many software development projects in the telecommunications industry face time and resource limitations which compromise human factors efforts. Due to this, the usability methods proven to produce effective, consistent user interfaces, such as those recommended by Nielsen (1993), cannot always be applied completely. Joint usability engineering with customer human factors experts, centered on iterative prototyping, can achieve evident improvements in usability despite these obstacles. The presentation describes an Ericsson Hewlett-Packard Telecommunications (EHPT) project, in which the character- based user interfaces of four standard network element management applications were improved to be consistent and task-oriented. Time pressure forced usability methods to be performed at a minimal level. A direct relationship between EHPT's human factors experts and a customer's (Royal PTT Nederland NV) human factors team, which acted as a channel for user input in the project, was established. The partly joint, partly parallel work of the two teams was a flexible solution to the time and resource limitations for usability engineering in the project. Initial feedback from end-users indicates that improvements in usability have been achieved. The lessons learned during the project are presented as pragmatic suggestions for usability survival in the time-pressured environment common to telecom software development projects.

  • Critical factors for starting usability engineering in the workplace

    There is much documented evidence which supports usability engineering, but it is still hard for first-time usability testers to convince management and development staff to invest in usability. Usability testing is still associated with laboratory testing; the expense of building a lab may inhibit smaller, grass-roots movements towards usability. This paper describes practical issues in initiating usability engineering inexpensively, including: understanding the full usability process and where to start, choosing the first project, determining appropriate measures and benchmarks, getting results of usability investigations out, and following through to build usability.<<ETX>>

  • Usability engineering in patients follow-up medical information systems

    This paper tries to show that the key quality attribute to introduce information systems in health environments at present is the usability obtained with human-computer interaction techniques (HCI). A neonathology management system was selected to show the application of a usability engineering process. In order to achieve high usability levels, a specific methodology was followed and specialized medical users periodically took part in the design process. The methodology is essentially an effective mixture of HCI techniques with minimum cost. This system provides medical professionals with all the information required to check and follow up patients periodically. The results show that not only the users accepted the system in their work environment, but they spontaneously increased their participation in the design as they benefited from the system. They even proposed new system features and capabilities that allow to improve the health care.
