    Finite-state automaton is a common method of dynamic network research. It considers the satellite network topology as a periodically repeating series of topology snapshots. Few studies have looked at the issue of how to divide the dynamic network topology into a series of snapshots. The most common method is to divide the satellite network period into equal-length snapshots. Global navigation satellite system (GNSS) constellations, with their already available inter-satellite links (ISLs), are the application of interest in this letter. ISLs in GNSS are established not only for inter-satellite ranging but also for inter-satellite communication. In this letter, we analyze the impact of domestic (GNSS) satellites on the communication performance. The snapshot division should give attention to both system performance and limited satellite storage space. In addition, an optimized snapshot division strategy for satellite network is proposed. It further illustrates a tradeoff between the satellite storage and the system performance. Simulation results show that the proposed strategy is efficient and can be preferred in a practical system.

The key technologies in multi-satellite precision orbit determination with inter-satellite-link (ISL) are described in the paper. Inter-satellite- link measuring model is established, and precise orbit determination method for multi-satellites and its corresponding formula partial derivative are proposed in the article. The orbit determination software programming is simplified, and clears the multi-satellite and multi-arc orbit determination process, then applies to satellite constellation YaoGan-9. Through the actual task tracking, results show that the method can completely meet the multi- satellite orbit determination application requirement based on earth-to- satellite and satellite-to-satellite tracking.

    In this paper, an interesting discussion on the spherical phased array antenna (SPAA) having unequal amplitude distribution is provided. The possibility of using two different amplitude excitations and their effect on the radiation characteristics are discussed in this paper. The results are compared with the case where all the elements are fed with equal amplitude and having an equal total RF radiated power. An SPAA is realized at X-Band to provide an Effective Isotropic Radiated Power (EIRP) of 23 dBW and tested for its performance. The antenna is meeting all the mission requirements. The antenna is used for one of the low earth orbiting satellite of ISRO.

  • Satellite communication and broadcasting systems in the 21st century

    There has been much technical progress and development in all areas of technology over recent years. The information society, satellite communication and broadcasting are part of this process, and have become a characteristic of the second half of the 20th century. In the global information infrastructure (GII) today, the space segment, on the one hand, plays an integrating role, and on the other, provides an opportunity for individual flexible access to information resources. Obviously the GII will play a leading role in economic development and the well-being of citizens in the 21st century in those countries which are actively participating in it's development. Currently there are many projects for creating new satellite communication and broadcasting systems, with the operation of these systems planned for the beginning of the 21st century.

  • X-band choked horn antenna for on-board TTC downlink of deep space satellite applications

    In this paper, design of a X-Band choked horn antenna for providing wide coverage in a satellite TTC downlink application is discussed. The chokes of the circular open ended waveguide helps to provide a hemispherical coverage which is capable of providing near 360° coverage when 2 identical elements are placed back to back. Designed antenna comprises of dual circularly polarized characteristics, suitable for the TTC system of deep space applications. The choke ring configuration also allows better reception of signals with improved multipath rejection from low elevation angle satellites. The design aspects and the simulation results of antenna elements are presented. This antenna finds application in many future ISRO missions.
