    The internet fundamentally changed our lives, from the way we connect with each other to how we conduct business globally. It has ushered in a century where everyone is 'a global citizen'. Industrial internet solutions are now being developed and applied in a range of industrial sectors, including those that play a pivotal role in driving economic growth. The power of data integration is that it is foundational for system‐level analytics and optimization of assets and industries. An ever‐increasing majority of surveyed industrial companies strongly believe that big data analytics is a top priority for their organization. Data capture and integration involve connecting to each source of data and monitoring events as they occur. This requires a time series database (TSDB), which is a software system that is optimized for handling time series data, arrays of numbers indexed by time.

  • DATA ANALYTICS AND PREDICTIVE ANALYTICS IN THE ERA OF BIG DATA

    This chapter outlines the key principles of machine learning and predictive analytics. It explains the new fundamentals of big data and the evolving technology. The chapter follows by the practical advice on how organizations can establish a new culture in order to truly transform their business in the new era. The wave of data frenzy did not happen overnight. Rather, it is a crescendo of events happening since the early 1980s where the fields of business intelligence and predictive analytics were known as 'data mining', a preexisting discipline with another closely related term known as knowledge discovery in databases (KDD), which is the aim of performing data mining. Analytics has a spectrum of methodologies, techniques, and approaches from descriptive, diagnostic, predictive and prescriptive analytics. Most data mining projects today follow the cross industry standard process for data mining (CRISP‐DM) which was conceived in 1996.

  • Exploring IoT Industry Applications: The Evolution of Internet of Things for Healthcare

    In this course, we will explore the main concepts that will provide you with the foundations and concepts related to Healthcare and Internet of Things. First, we will have a brief look into the evolution of healthcare from classic healthcare into diverse forms of electronic healthcare. Next, we will review the concept of Internet of Things and how it relates with healthcare in a variety of ways. Once these foundations are set, we will discuss the main challenges and opportunities that the use of the IoT paradigm implies for the healthcare sector. And we will finish with some conclusions and open questions.

  • Exploring IoT Industry Applications: Paving the Way for Future IoT Applications in Healthcare

    In this course, we will address some current real experiences that pave the way for future applications. These scenarios are focused on the use of connectable devices and advanced mobile devices that collect data (such as the omnipresent smartphones). These data are analyzed using computer science techniques, such as data mining, aiming, amongst others, at improving healthcare and offering new health related services. Some of the ideas and projects addressed in this module are still in an emerging state. This course is divided into three parts. In the first one, we will address real applications around the concept of Ambient Assisted Living. Next, we will move to the concept of mobile health, in which the smartphone plays a key role. Finally, we will address some challenges, namely interoperability problems, big data and security and privacy.
