  • Artifact Evaluation: Is It a Real Incentive?

It is well accepted that we learn hard lessons when implementing and re- evaluating systems, yet it is also acknowledged that science faces a crisis in reproducibility. Experimental computer science is far from immune, although it should be easier for CS than other sciences, given the emphasis on experimental artifacts, such as source code, data sets, workflows, parameters, etc. The data management community pioneered methods at ACM SIGMOD 2007 and 2008 to encourage and incentivize authors to improve their software development and experimental practices. Now, after 10 years, the broader CS community has started to adopt Artifact Evaluation (AE) to review artifacts along with papers. In this paper, we examine how AE has incentivized authors, and whether the process is having a measurable impact. Our answer can help guide CS, and more broadly, other computationally-oriented sciences, in encouraging peer-review of software artifacts and developing additional community practices for incentives.

  • Open Access Microelectronics Course

This paper presents the concepts used for a master class Microelectronics. The course contents are presented as web pages on the internet also for mobile devices. JavaScript enables a Powerpoint like presentation mode, animations, questionnaires and rendering of LTSPICE schematic files on a web page. Only no cost minimum administration tools LTSPICE, "Electric" and ISE Webpack are used for a laboratory to provide open access and enable a chip design. The status of development is shown with an example of a manufacturing process animation, a scan cell design and a synthesis of a UART.

  • Vulnerable network analysis using war driving and security intelligence

Wireless network is growing explosively not only in the corporate environment but also at the consumer space. If the network is left open and unsecured, anyone can not only use the network for downloading illegal content but also such a network can be used as a hacking medium to bring down other networks. Such open networks needs to be protected against such bad people who might take advantage of such an insecure network. Wireless networks can be vulnerable to various types of attacks like eavesdropping, hacking and freeloaders if there are no protections present in such wireless networks. IBM QRadar is security information and event management (SIEM) solution is used by security professionals to protect their networks and themselves. In this paper, we propose a system that uses war driving for collecting access point information and QRadar to analyze vulnerable networks by correlating real time traffic with the information present within the network. The work undertaken integrates information collected by war driving with IBM QRadar and then used to refine its correlation using the network information from open networks. After detecting vulnerable attacks and users, alerts are sent out to the security operation center.
