The 2020 IEEE International Conference on Systems, Man, and Cybernetics (SMC 2020) will be held in Metro Toronto Convention Centre (MTCC), Toronto, Ontario, Canada. SMC 2020 is the flagship conference of the IEEE Systems, Man, and Cybernetics Society. It provides an international forum for researchers and practitioners to report most recent innovations and developments, summarize state-of-the-art, and exchange ideas and advances in all aspects of systems science and engineering, human machine systems, and cybernetics. 2019 IEEE Symposium on Visual Languages and Human-Centric Computing (VL/HCC)

We solicit original, unpublished research papers on computing technologies and visual languages for modeling, programming, communicating, and reasoning, which are easier to learn, use or understand by humans than the current state-of-the-art. Papers should focus on efforts to design, formalize, implement, or evaluate those technologies and languages. This includes tools and visual languages intended for general audiences (e.g. professional or novice programmers, or the public) or domain-specific audiences (e.g. people working in business administration, production environments, healthcare, urban design or scientific domains).

    This paper describes the requirements engineering for AR-HUDs and provides proposals to solve issues encountered in moving from conventional HUDs to AR- HUDs. These topics can be transferred to consumer electronics AR systems. The field of view for AR support on highways should be at least 20° × 20° and 60° × 40° in cities. This is about an order of magnitude larger than today and will be achievable by using holographic subassemblies for practical HUD volumes. AR content is not only projected on the road but also on bright buildings. For such use cases, the required luminance was calculated for a reasonable contrast ratio of 3 : 1 as 40,000 cd/m2. New HUD display technologies are needed to reach this value.

However, the current big data platforms still have many drawbacks. Among the limitations, managing access interfaces, an important process of analytic service development, needs to be improved significantly. The main reason is that the emergence of too many systems recently has been making the process become more and more complicated and costly. Therefore, we propose here a system related to the field of big data management, in particular to interface management to allow end-users to use easily their desired functions including metadata and data accessing. It also helps platform managers to extend and modify effortlessly the access interfaces. A case study on log analytic service is conducted to verify the validation and practice use of our system.

A stream level traffic control device ('stream filter') is proposed at the end-system, which may restrain a traffic stream in response to cell level connection status. The interactive mechanism between the session scheduler and the stream filters has been investigated.<>

  • Organizational learning online

    In times of continuous changes, enforced through globalization and networking, organizations face the need both to react quickly to experienced or occurring changes, and to act pro-actively to foreseen developments. An effective way for organizations to act and react is to model the business at the process level and to re-construct or rearrange this representation according to the needs for dynamic adaptation. This way potentials to cope with required changes can be explored dynamically and possible solutions can be evaluated before implementation - organizational development can occur "on-line". Once business processes with the user interfaces visible for users can be executed, organizational changes and solutions become transparent to employees. We report on both a framework and a corresponding tool enabling organizational learning online. The tool is based on a model-based representation scheme comprising business processes, problem-domain data, user and interaction modalities. The framework for organizational learning emphasizes both individual and shared mental models. According to the framework, the interactive execution of business processes effects single- and double-loop organizational learning, as well as the structuring of business intelligence in an organizational memory.

  • Interface Information Management Tools for the Maritime and Oil and Gas Industry

    When developing complex Commercial-Off-The-Shelf (COTS) component-based systems, it is important to manage the interfaces between components properly, so that the components can work together smoothly. In new building of ships or Mobile Offshore Units (MOUs), although the control systems become more and more complex and integrated, the interface information management practice is still dominated by using Excel, MS Word, or Pdf files. This paper presents a study to formalize the management of the interfaces, to design and implement two example tools, by IBM and Genus respectively, to manage interface specification and communication in COTS component-based development. The contributions of the study are two fold, first, based on interviews and meetings with different stakeholders in the industry, the study elaborates functional and non-functional requirements of interface management, second, the study illustrates how to combine an interface management tool with system engineering tools and processes to control and govern development, maintenance, and evolution of large COTS component-based systems.

  • Representation and use of task knowledge in a user interface design environment

    A rapid prototyping approach to user interface design may be enhanced by integration with a theory of the users' tasks. The paper discusses various approaches to modelling user tasks including task knowledge structures (TKS) which provides a theory of the structure of task knowledge, together with a method for the identification and modelling of this knowledge. Formal specification languages may be used to provide a precise description of TKS models and to assist in their validation; the use of LOTOS for this purpose is demonstrated. The integration of task knowledge with a rapid prototyping approach to design is introduced in the context of work on the Adept project. A software demonstrator for Adept provides a graphical environment where a task model is used to derive an interface model, which may be further refined to produce an executable prototype.<>

  • Flexibility in interface development

    Two systems that employ intelligent user interfaces as front ends have been developed using Focus technology. The two systems, while addressing essentially the same user tasks, were built for different user populations, they had different development contexts, and produced as a result different systems. The discussion highlights the problems posed by these diverse development and user contexts and shows how the Focus project's architecture and toolkit has met these challenges. The paper looks at the organisational context of the two developments and then discusses the two systems in the context of the system architectures and interfaces.<>

  • Interface Management in Wireless Hetrogeneous Enviornment – A Survey

    Today, mobile terminals are equipped with multi-channel and multiple access interfaces for any kind of applications (or services). The combination of these access technologies needs an intelligent control to interface the best channel, interface/ access or link for best services. The interface management system manages the same environment of different nodes or networks equipped with the different resources. In interface management, an arrangement is used to assign channels to interfaces in the multi-channel multi-interface environment. The effective use of multiple channels is the main function of interface management when the channels per node are lesser than interfaces. Many strategies have been proposed in the literature based on different environment and different attributes. In this paper, we survey and discuss diverse approaches. After analyzing these techniques and identified their advantages and limitations, it is recommended that artificial intelligence could be a promising direction for research work in this area.

  • Integrated architectures for database interface development

    Presents a number of approaches to the development of database interfaces, with a particular emphasis upon the development of such interfaces within the confines of the database system itself. Conventional approaches to interface development are reviewed, and weaknesses identified which stem from the decoupling of regularly interacting components. It is shown how a more integrated approach, in which databases are used to implement their own interfaces, provides significant direct benefits without precluding subsequent support for mainstream interface development architectures.<>
