  • Sonochemistry and hydrothermal pathways to the fabrication of ZnO nanowire transistors

    We report on the growth of ZnO nanowires using two distinctive methods; sonochemistry and hydrothermal growth. The dimensions of the nanowires were varied by changing the concentration of the solution, growth time and volume of the solution. During growth by sonification, we were also able to alter the power supplied to the solution and the dimensions of the sonicator tip. The nanowires produced were then imaged using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and optical microscopy. We aim to create nanowires with dimensions suitable for the fabrication of ZnO nanowire transistor.

  • A sonification system based on geographic and meteorologic data

    Most algorithmic composition system is implemented based on the input of music parameters, which needs professional music and technology training to complete the automated composition. This paper proposed an innovated way called Geographic and Meteorologic Data Sonification System (GMDSS), to perform the data mappings into music for various devices such as hand phone or other hand- hold devices, and the driver can retrieve the environment information in real time to let people concentrate on driving without the need of paying attention to the long-term complicated data visualization. The mapping relationship between geographic/meteorologic data and music features is discussed, and the result shows the implementation of GIS and weather data which can compose the proper correspondent music accordingly.

  • Interactive sonification of images on mobile devices for the visually impaired

    A human-computer mobile interface for visually impaired persons is presented in the article. The authors propose several methods for image analysis and sound synthesis basing on interaction with a mobile device using tactile gestures. The developed algorithms allow to sonify colour and greyscale images, but mainly focus on the presentation of abstract black and white shapes for use in education of blind children. The interaction of the sonification process is achieved through various tactile gestures depending on the sonification mode, ranging from simple point-touches to two-handed multi- touch control. Implementation and pilot test results of the proposed human- computer interface using an Android tablet is included in the article.

  • Principles of cyber-physical models mapping onto sonification sound spaces

    The Industry 4.0 actively changes the existing technological paradigm. The IoT, USN and Big Data together form the basis of the Cyber-Physical Systems, the main driver of the Industry 4.0 world. Meanwhile, we still depend a lot on a human operator inside the complex systems. The research of auditory representation, i.e. sonification, can provide us the new forms of data and systems monitoring. The paper presents the results of the research of sonification application to the cyber-physical systems.

  • Real-time low latency movement sonification in stroke rehabilitation based on a mobile platform

    Mobile hardware platforms are a major requirement for interactive movement sonification. Emerging applications for the computationally demanding auditory feedback technique are stroke rehabilitation and assisted training in sports. This paper presents and evaluates a smartphone based hardware platform for interactive, low latency movement sonification based on inertial measurement units. In contrast to existing hardware platforms the proposed platform enables low latency and battery powered long-term training sessions and improved usability in stroke rehabilitation by an intuitive graphical user interface and wearability. The evaluation focuses on real-time operation performance and overall latency. Furthermore, the overall latency of the smartphone-based platform are compared to results of a heterogeneous RISC/DSP and a PC-based processing platform.

  • Wearable Auditory Biofeedback Device for Blind and Sighted Individuals

    This study discusses the feasibility of a reference-tracking task of ankle- joint exercise with interactive sonification for sighted and blind individuals in terms of both objective and subjective evaluations via our wearable auditory biofeedback device using the instrumented ankle-foot orthosis (AFO) called GaitEcho. Our experimental results suggest it offers similarly adequate functionality for both blind and sighted participants.

  • Sonification of EEG signals based on musical structures

    This short communication proposes a new method to translate human EEG recordings into music. The sonification method is based on the relation of primary concepts of musical composition to different time-frequency characteristics of electrical signals from the brain that give information about the mental states. In general terms, normalization and thresholding procedures were applied to wavelet transforms of analyzed signals in order to extract amplitude and frequency parameters that were mapped to several synthetic or natural sounds following basic musical composition structures. The method seeks to provide a new perspective about the brain activity by means of an auditory feedback which not only facilitates the long term monitoring in clinical contexts like polysomnographics studies or epilepsy but also offers a new tool for a self-understating of the different human body processes modulated by the brain.
